Does this convertor make a humming noise? I intend to use it to power an amplifier from the USA and the voltage convertor I currently have makes a loud humming noise making it impractical for the purpose.

This, like all converters will make a slight noise when in operation.

If it is the item code VR05 we would suggest looking for a 3.15 amp time delay fuse.

I bought this (300W model) a couple of days ago to power my Canadian stereo amplifier. I have had problems in the past with step-down transformers making a loud humming noise in operation which is of course no good when being used with Hi-Fi equipment. The staff in the Holborn store were kind enough to let me listen to the unit in operation before buying and I am pleased to say that it is basically silent in operation and works exactly as expected and is happily powering the heart of my entertainment system. I would recommend these units to others and it only misses a 5 star rating for being about 10% more expensive than similar models from other retailers. I would point out though, that not all transformers are created equal and I consider that small premium to be well worth the knowledge that it is a good bit of kit. Please note: apparently this and other transformers cannot be returned in case of fault, I'm not very clear on why this is, probably in case of them being blown by drawing excessive voltage. It is something to bear in mind but as with any transformer you should very carefully check the maximum draw of the equipment you intend to use and purchase the correct unit accordingly.
