Energy Saving Tips from MaplinSmart meters, which measure your energy consumption, are a great way of keeping track of how much energy you're using. When you can actually see how much carbon you're wasting every time you switch on the TV or make a cup of coffee, it will make you think twice. The Home CO2 meter is a portable monitor you can take from room to room to see at a glance which appliances are using the most electricity. Each year the average UK household spends: £36 running a tumble dryer£27 running a washing machine£70 on lighting£40 operating a dishwasher£30 powering a basic computer £60 running a fridge-freezerIn the UK each year, stereos on standby cost £290m, and produce 1.6m tons of CO2 and TVs on standby cost £88m and produce 480,000 tons of CO2. For every pound saved on an electricity bill, you're also saving 6kg of carbon dioxide, which is what a coal-fired generating plant would emit while making this much power. The energy meter does not require you to carry out any electrical wiring. The clip fits on the external cable, which has a live supply running through. If you have any doubt about any connection or how to install it consult a qualified electrician.

In my opinion, a flawed product. Easy to install but failed to consistently operate as described. Transmitter kept loosing connection with receiver, historical data disappeared after a week or so & transmitter would also refuse to maintain correct sampling frequency. Spent days trying to get the thing to keep working. Doesn't like cheap alkaline or rechargeable batteries - if you do want one I recommend branded batteries. As it works on 433Mhz, if you have any other kit on this (or similar) frequency i.e weather stations or alarm system, you may get problems with interference. The Manufacturer was helpful in trying to resolve issues as was Maplins re the refund. But ultimately, a non-starter.

This was one of the easiest gadgets to install that I have ever bought ! Simply clip the sensor onto the meter, put in the batteries and away you go. You do not need any electrical experience at all. It really is that simple. If you are buying this make sure you can easily get access to the electric meter and that you can see the wires coming out of the meter - this is where you "snap clip" the sensor on. All the default values on the control unit were what I needed and it is more useful than I thought. The control unit is robust and can be wall mounted or free standing. I am sure we will save money on our electric bill just by being made aware how much an hour/day we are spending. For those of you who care about the environment you can also monitor your equivalent CO2 emissions based on the power you have used. A very good buy and my favourite and most useful gadget in the house.
