That should be absolutely fine.

Unfortunately spare mains adapters are not available.

This is a SATA drive.

As a total IT ignoramus. Can this device be used to back up my entire laptops content including all programmes and associated data so in the event of a laptop hard drive failure all programmes and data are on this device and can be retrieved?

You would need to use seperate software such a Norton ghost or Casper XP. These will create a complete image of the system drive on this external drive which can be retirved in the case of system failure.

Can i use this with various pc's and laptops, or is it a one system only thing?

This can be used with numerous PCs.

Is this item optimised for Mac or PC?

This will work absolutely fine on either a Mac or a PC.

How much useable space do you get once formatted

This would be approximately 930gb

I have bought this drive for my iBook laptop. Do not be put off by the "for PC" in big letters on the box. It works perfectly with my Mac, but first you will need to re-format the drive.

Do not double-click anything when you connect the unit. As long as the icon comes up on the desktop when you plug it into the USB socket you should be ok.

Just go to the Utilities folder (normally in Applications) and click on Disk Utility. Within the Utility program, click on the drive and then erase. Make sure you change Volume Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Once that is complete you should have no problems. I have 700Gb stored on mine so far and it is the quietest drive I have ever known, in fact at first I could not believe it was on. Transfer speeds are good enough for me, but speed is not my priority - space is, and this is exactly what I was looking for.

I bought a pair of these as backup data units. Like any of these usb external drives I would not rely on them for continuous running however as an 'on once a day' backup system they are excellent. Once the integral software is configured the daily backup process is painless.

The one weakness is that I understand spare mains adapters are not availab which is a minor oversite but other than that I would commend this unit as a good buy for anyone looking for a reasonably priced and secure method of backing up valuable data.
