can I store downloads from I-player on this machine

The unit can be used for storage of any file you wish.

Hello, does this product have a on/off switch.

On/off action would be controlled via the mains rather than an onboard switch.

Can this be left powered up all the time or must it be switched off after use?

The unit can be left powered on if you require it.

Does the Seagate drive have any security or encryption software to protect the data

File encryption/security features are not included with the item so you would need 3rd party software to achieve that with this unit.

Will the work on a PS3 or other games consoles such as the 360

As we do not sell the PS3 or other consoles we could not guarantee it. As long as the console can accept large NTFS (or FAT32) partitions on it's USB ports then we can see no reason why not (usually the console manufacturer is the best option first to confirm the external drive requirements).

can you tell me if the external power supply is 230v only or switched mode (110-230v)?. I realise I will have to use a pin adaptor but does the transformer work at all voltages

yes the supply is a switched mode supply

was wondering if you could install an OS on the external drive if you set it up as the primary hard drive in bios?

As long as the PC supports USB boot via Bios then yes this product should support that

Yes it is a single NTFS partition

Will this drive work with USB1 (Iknow it will run a little slower) and with Windows 7?

Yes the product does support that.

Can the unit be "stood up" so that it occupies less desk space?

The item can be mounted vertically or horizontally

Does this model actually have 1tb of space?

The formatted capacity, as with any drive, will be slightly less.

Is the hard drive suitable for use on multiple mediums, i.e. storing video on the hard drive and then moving and connecting the drive to an games console for playback?

Assuming that the systems used support usb mass storage class devices then yes.

If I format this for my MAC at home, will I then be able to tranfer data from and to my PC at work?

If formatted to FAT32 a MAC and PC should be able to utilise said drive.

Csn I use this to backup my pc hard drive?

The item is merely external storage so does not have the facility to backup a system hard drive. You could however use the drive with some form of 3rd party backup software which would then allow a full system backup to the drive.

I did not require a small portable drive but something a bit more substantial to sit on the desktop. This installed immediately, has a very fast response (even on USB 1 and an older PC)so I can't fault it.

This is a very easy to use and kinda portable device. The only downside is i can't seem to access this device using my xbox (think this is something to do with formatting though and not a drive thing) but thumbs up.

Very happy with this hard drive. I had to reformat it for my Mac, which initially I had some problems with as I didn't know how to do it, but after looking at a very helpful tutorial from "Macgenius" on You Tube it was sorted very quickly. Highly recommended.
