On a good sunny day, 4 x AA 2000mAh NiMh batteries can be charged in as little as 6 hours. The batteries are charged within the case, which features a fold-out stand for directing the solar panel towards the sun. The solar charger measures 165mm (w) x 130mm (h) x 55mm (d) and the carry handle extrudes a further 43mm to the height of the unit. The charger is supplied complete with a 5-way spider for powering small electrical goods such as personal stereos, toys or torches.
Please note: the charging circuit is designed to charge 4 rechargeable batteries in an in-series circuit system (4.8V). Only 4 batteries of the same size and brand can be charged at any one time. Recharging times will depend on the strength of the sunlight, the level to which the batteries are discharged as well as the battery capacity. The higher the capacity of the batteries to be charged, the longer the charge time required will be. Do not attempt to mix different sizes or brands of batteries. Do not attempt to recharge alkaline (non-rechargeable) batteries. Batteries are sold separately.

I am a published author of a Solar Electricity Handbook.
I bought one of these solar battery chargers in late July and I have to say - for the money, it really is very good indeed, and far better than many other more expensive solar chargers that are available.
During the summer months the unit really does what it says on the tin - you can charge up a set of AAA or AA batteries in just a few hours. By my calculations during the depths of winter it may take a couple of days to do the same thing, but so long as you have enough spare batteries to have one set on charge whilst you have another set in use, that is not going to be a problem.
The battery charger also includes a cable for charging up portable equipment such as mobile phones and MP3 players. I cannot comment on how good this is because I've never used it, but the output is unregulated so it won't be suitable for every portable battery device you may want to recharge.
The downside of this unit is that you can only charge up four batteries at a time - if you have one or two batteries to charge, you can't do it. You also have to have identical batteries - so you can charge four identical AAA batteries or four identical AA batteries at a time, but not a combination of AA or AAA batteries - or even AAA batteries of different capacities from different manufacturers.
As a consequence, this isn't going to be the battery charger for everyone. However, if you can live with these restrictions, this is a very good charger indeed. I now use it as my sole means for charging up AA and AAA batteries. In fact, I can't even remember where my mains powered battery charger is any more!
