Accessibility Guidelines v1.0.1
The following document is the statement of intent by Maplin Electronics to maintain the accessibility of its website, forums and blogs with accordance to th WAI and DDA.
The document is open for revision at any time and a history will be maintained to keep users informed of this commitment by Maplin Electronics.
1. Statement of commitment
1.1 Maplin is committed to making its website as accessible as possible to all (including those with visual or hearing impairments) as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act.
1.2 Unless it can be shown to be technically or practically impossible, all content MUST be made accessible.
2. Scope
2.1 These standards relate to all Maplin websites, forums and blogs.
3. Website content
3.1 All content and features delivered using JavaScript must be accessible with JavaScript switched off - see JavaScript Standards.
3.2 All images, banners or icons will have suitable ALT or TITLE tags to aid users with no images or are using screen readers
3.3 Divide large blocks of information into manageable chunks e.g. use short paragraphs where possible
3.4 Lines should not be longer than 70 characters (for the browser default font setting) including the spaces in between words
3.5 Give the expanded version of each abbreviation or acronym in a document where it first occurs.
3.6 Pages must use heading elements such as H1, H2 etc in the correct order
3.7 No information, text or data is conveyed by relying solely on colour, shape, size.
4. Using Images
4.1 No images will be rendered using ASCII
4.2 All information used should make sense without any supporting images
4.3 No symbols should be used to convey messages in their semantic use (ie --> instead of to the right)
4.4 Any calls to actions such as "click this to view the PDF" will be supported with icons
5. Structure and Layout
5.1 A constant and regular use and position of navigation will be maintained at all times
5.2 Different sections of the website will be consistant in layout and placement
5.3 Text will be presented on a plain solid background and be seperated with a space and half with the same applied to line height
5.4 No pop ups will be rendered without the user intentionally opening a link
6. Movement and Animation
6.1 No items on the screen will flicker.
6.2 There will be no use of blinking, flickering or flashing objects.
7. Sounds, videos and other media content)
7.1 Videos or audio files will not play automatically.
7.2 Videos created by Maplin will have subtitles, external videos will have a disclaimer if there are no subtitles.
8. Forms and input boxes
8.1 All forms will have correctly ordered TABINDEX for keyboard users
8.2 Dropdown menus and other methods of selection must not use onChange as keyboard users may be forced to use the first selection rather than the one they need.
8.3 A clear and definite 'submit' button will be present and will be obvious for the form it is intended
8.4 All input boxes will provide clear instructions of their use.
9. Documents and PDFs
9.1 Where possible downloadable PDF files will have a text or HTML version available.
10. Links and other navigation
10.1 A standard use of ACTIVE, LINK, HOVER and VISITED will be used throughout the site
10.2 Any links employing a thumbnail image will have a title associated with it describing the link in plain english
11. Accessibility
11.1 Users will be able to increase font size to 200% without the use of other technologies
11.2 Stylesheets will be used to control design and presentation at all times.
11.3 Tables will not be used for non-tabular content or styling. Other tags such as FONT will not be used inline for presentation.
