This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever bought! I have tried this on 3 different computers with 3 different operating systems and it doesn't work on any of them! It won't install on Windows 8, nor will it install on OSX 10.4 despite it saying it supports anything OS9 or upwards. Windows 8 can access the card reader, but not the SATA reader itself - what's the point in selling something brand new that isn't compatible with an operating system that has been widely available for over a year? The installation disk software has glaring spelling errors on the homepage, which doesn't give you confidence in the software and when you run the installation for the backup module on its own, it wants a serial number to continue - but it doesn't give you a serial number to input. Sort it out, Maplin! Please make sure you test your products before selling them! Now I have to travel back another 30 minutes to my nearest store and return it!
Super buy so useful card reader plus 2 usb ports but the 1 touch back up makes it worth every penny and puts those old sata drives to use again. a must for your desk top or laptop.
Works. Read a harddrive, read an SD card. If you turn the power on with a harddrive in it while connected to USB it can serge your USB port causing (in my case) OSX to stop sending power to that port. But if you don't do that it is fine.
This item arrived in thoughtfully designed packaging for the base unit USB cable and power unit. Very easy to follow instructions and a simple drop in of the SATA drive which worked excellently. Also supplied is a CD with software and numerous additional ports USB / SD etc which I have yet to make the most of. Excellent value for money. Peter G
Worked straight out box, only downside, after 2nd drive put in, the little plastic door that flips back up snapped at the hinge and is no loger fitted, however does not affect the function of the unit
On the whole a very useful addition to my hardware. Works happily under Ubuntu 11.04, and accommodates drives formatted in either FAT32 or EXT4. The card reader accommodates CF cards and is much faster transferring photographs compared with my camera. Only downside is that it interferes with my network printer/scanner, so needs to be unplugged from the USB port when I want to print or scan.
Brilliant worked straight out of the box managed to get all the data from our old hard disk with ease and now using it as a back up drive.
I have been using the Unitek version of this excellent product for 12-18 months as a fast backup system for a large amount of data over a handful of HDs, with no problems - until a week ago, when I started getting write errors, which continued even after I ran a chkdsk d:/f on it. I have since discovered the power supply is faulty. Will try and get a replacement power supply from my local Maplin tomorrow.
I was expcting to be able to use a 350 gig hard drive from an other source, but it wont read, could be a faulty drive, otherwise it is a useful card reader works well with extra U S B
All works a expected. Delivery was really good, ordered PM and delivered next day
