Bought N78AR and replacement tips. Have to say , very good buy . For 11 pound i got a iron which is identical to vellmen model VTSS5. The tips cost me just short of the iron price , so whether i get 6 month or 6 years use its a no brainer! Tinned the tip correctly and did a couple of test solders on a few caps. I like it. I was actually going to buy gas powered torch but now ive got it home im glad i didnt. Its just the portability i like on gas powered but the last 2 ive bought have died after very short usage, so i think ive made the right choice ;)
This soldering iron is excellent value for money, I got in on half the asking price and I have to say I'm very satisfied with it. I do use weller soldering irons at work which cost around £400+ and I must say even that I didn't expect anything closer to that, I was really pleasantly surprised at the end as I was able to do all my soldering without problem. As I saw in others reviews that handle gets hot I think it might be caused by using it on highest temperature setting for long time which is something you shouldn't with soldering iron of this price. little bit above 60% ( on temperature dial) did all for me and it wasn't just soldering wire to wire (it was bit complex synth sequencer project) and I was able to finish it with this iron without breaking sweat. Plus you can get spare tips from maplin so that's another bonus. Hope this helps So go get it while on sale:)
50W Solder Station
I've had this for a few years now and it works pretty well. It feels a bit cheap but does the job. I got the extra set of 3 tips which were a good investment. My main complaints are that the cable between the iron and the station is a bit stiff and so can be awkward to handle, and the mains lead is a bit short. I set the temperature with a thermocouple connected to a multimeter and found just between the red and orange sections on the control was about right for normal soldering with lead-free solder (about 350degC) - but this control isn't calibrated so the temperature may be different for you.

I first bought one some 12 years ago. A couple of faults in that the iron itself broke away after 2 years but, managed to fix it using Liquid Metal. After that the iron performed flawlessly for another 10 years until it gave up through usage. It is a great tool for me for tacking brass sheets together before using a gas torch to completely weld the seam in building model railway coaches and Locomotive in brass and nickel silver. I will be buying another one as I still have spare unused tips for the iron.
very high quality iron and you cant go wrong for the price. However it takes a while to heat up. :)
Simple, cheap, did the job while it worked. Mine worked for just over 1 year with sporadic use and has now died (power light comes on but the iron remain cold).
I have bought this items three times - one for myself and the to my brother in low - as it was very easy to use - I have also bought one to my father. we all use it when ever soldering is needed. it is stable and worm up fast, do exactly what you need doesn't heat the area.
I have only just started to use this iron and so far it has performed well. Purchased 9/2013. Temp control is guesswork but I found that on half heat it solders pcb components quickly. Initial heating takes a while, but once up to temp it does well. It comes with I fine point tip, which is interchangeable, but I didn't get the extra ones. As an inexperienced solderer I would say it was a good first purchase.
The original iron, of this type, lasted me 15 years. First one lasted less than 15 Hours, indicator led stopped working and loud buzzing noise from within the casing. Returned for replacement. Second one, led packed up after 2 days, low buzz from case. But its useable. You will need to purchase the additional bits for heavier work.
Great high quality kit perfect for my new workshop. It takes a while to heat up but when its hot its great highly recommend .
