N78ar soldering iron
Good while it lasted but now I have to repair the thing after what appears to be a common fault. I found that on the pcb there is the variable resistor 500k. This is problematic and takes no time at all to burn and cover with carbon. Also on inspection c1 capacitor (not soldered) and could be pulled out without desoldering. Both faults combined caused r4 resistor to burn and end the life of the iron. Now need to find out what r4 is if anyone knows so I can get it up and running again with better compo's I also plan to add a seperate switch as it needs it stop damage the the 500k variable (r1) And also so I don't need to change temp all the time. I suggest using the wall switch to people who already own this iron it'll last much longer as it's a good iron without these issues
Temperature/Wattage isn't as described
Bought this 50w iron on recommendation from the store manager to replace the Antex 18w I bought earlier but found the tip was missing when I got it home. The tip doesnt melt maplin 217 degree solder at the highest setting, something the previous 18w iron did very easily. The spec can only be an estimate at this quality. I used to think Maplin was ok for emergency parts that you need on the day and accepted their business of higher prices for convenience, but I've wasted 3 car trips messing around and still haven't got a soldering iron - the soldering irony being that 75% of Maplins products are defunct without one.
good while it lasted
I've had the iron for about a year, only using it occasionally. Last time I was using it, the was a 'pop' accompanied by the unmistakeable smell of blown-up capacitor, and the iron now has no temperature control ! I would have expected a slightly longer life.
Stopped Working Correctly
I've had this soldering iron for a few years now and at first it was great but recently it stopped working correctly. The iron only heats up now when the temp control is on Max. On any other temp setting the indicator light comes on but only faintly and the iron doesn't heat up, it has to be on Max now which is sometimes too hot.
Bought N78AR and replacement tips. Have to say , very good buy . For 11 pound i got a iron which is identical to vellmen model VTSS5. The tips cost me just short of the iron price , so whether i get 6 month or 6 years use its a no brainer! Tinned the tip correctly and did a couple of test solders on a few caps. I like it. I was actually going to buy gas powered torch but now ive got it home im glad i didnt. Its just the portability i like on gas powered but the last 2 ive bought have died after very short usage, so i think ive made the right choice ;)
This soldering iron is excellent value for money, I got in on half the asking price and I have to say I'm very satisfied with it. I do use weller soldering irons at work which cost around £400+ and I must say even that I didn't expect anything closer to that, I was really pleasantly surprised at the end as I was able to do all my soldering without problem. As I saw in others reviews that handle gets hot I think it might be caused by using it on highest temperature setting for long time which is something you shouldn't with soldering iron of this price. little bit above 60% ( on temperature dial) did all for me and it wasn't just soldering wire to wire (it was bit complex synth sequencer project) and I was able to finish it with this iron without breaking sweat. Plus you can get spare tips from maplin so that's another bonus. Hope this helps So go get it while on sale:)
50W Solder Station
I've had this for a few years now and it works pretty well. It feels a bit cheap but does the job. I got the extra set of 3 tips which were a good investment. My main complaints are that the cable between the iron and the station is a bit stiff and so can be awkward to handle, and the mains lead is a bit short. I set the temperature with a thermocouple connected to a multimeter and found just between the red and orange sections on the control was about right for normal soldering with lead-free solder (about 350degC) - but this control isn't calibrated so the temperature may be different for you.
50W soldering station
I first bought one some 12 years ago. A couple of faults in that the iron itself broke away after 2 years but, managed to fix it using Liquid Metal. After that the iron performed flawlessly for another 10 years until it gave up through usage. It is a great tool for me for tacking brass sheets together before using a gas torch to completely weld the seam in building model railway coaches and Locomotive in brass and nickel silver. I will be buying another one as I still have spare unused tips for the iron.
very high quality iron and you cant go wrong for the price. However it takes a while to heat up. :)
Simple, cheap, did the job while it worked. Mine worked for just over 1 year with sporadic use and has now died (power light comes on but the iron remain cold).
