This weather station offers amazing value and comes with everything you need to set it up in the garden. • Very poor

Stops connecting to the base unit after a few minutes. Re-set the transmitter, and that only last a few minutes. For such an expensive item I would have expected better quality from Maplin. I will be returning it for a refund. There must be better units for sale out there for the same price.

  • Overview

I have bought and installed this weather station Overall the kit is easy to assemble and setup. The instructions could do with a re-write as they are no the best A couple of changes to the Kit would be useful 1. The pole in two parts could do with a self tapper screw to stop the top rotating when the bottom half is fixed 2. If the pole had locations for the two arms then the wiring could be significantly reduced and generally tider 3. addition of wire routing on the arms would again help to keep things tidy 4. Captive nuts or nut arrestors in the plastic flanges on the arms would also be helpful 5. Rechargeable batteries that can be charged of the USB All in all though a great piece of kit not withstanding others comments on the display contrast/readability but as i tend to use the PC not really a problem for me

  • Short-lived

It worked for about 3 weeks then the USB link to the PC packed up. The whole thing is not very accurate and it's difficult to see the screen.

  • Rain/Temperature/wind not working

Given a weather Forcaster for Chistmas, found the screen dull and not easy to read also the wireless bit to the screen from the outside sensors has now packed up. I have checked batteries all ok still no responce.

  • Talking point

Had this bit of fun kit installed in garden for about 2 weeks now. It is site about 30m from house and mounted on 8 ft pole. Its survived 3 intense storms in that time. Like other users I suspect the wind speed records significantly below the actual speed, wind direction vane does tend to spin wildly so a minor modification will be forthcoming (once the storms pass!). It was really interesting to be able to say how much rain we've had in the last week (over 80mm!). Leaving aside the suspected inaccuracies this is a good fun piece of gadgetry, and always proves to be a talking point with friends and neighbours. Fairly good value for the cost, would recommend it.

  • Screen not easy to see

Had the black version for Christmas setting up was ok . this is the worst bit , the screen is hardly visible seems like it's got a plastic film permanently on screen, when press the screen to see the back light so u can see it,it automatically goes into mode setting, biggest gripe you can't see it very we'll . Look for something else where the screen is clearly visible . Very poor

  • All in all not bad ... well mostly

First off I have to say I am essentially pleased and see no point in listing all that it does well except that I was pleasantly surprised with range and update rate. Mine was out front with the indoor unit 25-30m away on the far side of the ground floor of a stone build with 600mm walls and 1m X 1m windows. I was amazed it worked at all and was fully prepared o put the unit in the window. I have recently moved it into a field at least 40m away and put it on 6m 2" X 2" (Much cheaper than a pole) and although it doesn't like being right next to the TV it is still working through the outside wall. But them my walls are stone and do not contain foil backed insulation which I suspect might be a problem given the frequency. Gripes ... The rain gauge measures wind, or to be more precise strong gusts. Once I see gust above about 8m/s it starts reporting rain when there isn't any. (The gauge is low down just below the guys so it isnt moving much! All else is high up.) Questions ... Anyone else had this problem and perhaps solved it? Anyone know if HPA is temperature compensated, I have set the elevation fiddle. Final comments ... External power would be nice with an option to leave the light on. Cumulus seems to be better software than the basic stuff supplied. I think for £100, O I should have waited, its not half bad, lets face it if you want met office or even regional weather data its going to cost at least an order of magnitude more. Toy? Perhaps , but an informative, well made and interesting one I think. Not an expert yet but this little gadget may spur me on to bigger things which was sort of the point. Thus far it serves me well, bar the windy rain thing!

  • I have had this for a few weeks now, and nothing but problems. Basically, after a couple of days, you lose communication between the station and the unit. The only way to get it back is to go to the garden and reset the station. Tried to experiment to rule out other factors, but still happens if you sit the station on the unit so there is zero range. Maplin quickly replaced the transmitter, but I have the same problem again. I have yet to collect any meaningful readings and now need to return to Maplin to see what can be done

  • This unit is great when it works. The trouble is that it doesn't work for very long! Every so often (it can be hours it can be days) it stops passing the information to the PC and so website uploads stop. The unit still talks to the station, but it's no good if it doesn't pass the data to the PC. I've spent hours and hours trying to solve it with different computers, operating systems, USB cables and USB ports to no avail. The only fix is to reset the unit thereby losing all the history. Very frustrating. And so I've sent it back to Maplin "to be looked at".

If you use Cumulus software (Free to download from SANDAYSOFT) you can configure the weather station. Just downloaded it shows moon phases, sunrise/sets, dusk, day length, moon rise/set etc. You can configure to WH 1080.
