Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quite like it I bought this to take camping so kids could have iPods for those moments when you just need quiet! I have had no problem with it not fully charging but it does take literally ALL day .... But it is a tiny piece of kit and Britain isn't known for endless sunshine. Leave ipod charging overnight and it is good to go next day. At a push you can get limited top up on a second device whilst charging battery via panels but this is really only for 'arghhhh no battery phone issues' and no replacement for an 'in-car' charge. Think of it as one day's charge = one device charged and keep your expectations to that. For the price mine does what it says it does ....

Rated 1 out of 5 by from These units must have a generic fault as I have tried 2 of these now and both will not charge the internal battery using the solar panels. The charge level get half way and stops, no matter how long you leave in the sun. Having charged the unit up via USB cable the internal battery has limited capacity and runs out before charging up your mobile fully!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Freeloader Classic I bought two of these - the new higher capacity ones with a USB outlet rather than the special round power outlet plus set of adapters, that the earlier model had. I rather regret it, just as I regret buying the earlier model. Both of the new model freeload classics, exhibit a strange phenomenon for many hours after charging, when nothing is connected to the USB outlet. It is that they make a very faint "clicking" noise when held against the ear, at about 7 Herz (7 clicks a second). After 48 hours, even tho' not used, they are half-flat. It is clear that they are supposed to only power up when something is sensed as connected to their USB outlet, yet something is using up their power internally when it shouldn't, as making that "clicking" noise, no matter what else it signifies, is itself using up some power. The earlier version did not have this fault, and did hold its puny charge for many days, but it was flat in one hour, and the phone not yet charged. The tiny solar charger it came with was rubbish, so I bought also two Freeloader "Superchargers" - they are a larger solar panel but it is rigid so very easy to break, and they are still only a puny 0.5 watts, which for the size, is poor - it means they charge your freeloader at the best, in ideal equitorial sun, at 500 ma (0.5 amps), whereas your phone is going to take current at 1000 ma (1 amps) to charge it. Usually even the supercharger is only going to give you 0.2 amps charging current; if the sun doesn't shine at all that day, the charging current will be negligible. In the end I bought an "EasyAcc" which has 10,000 mAh energy storage capacity (10 amp-hours, if you prefer), compared to the 1,200 mAh of the Freeloader (1.2 amp-hours). This can charge my phone up 10 times over before it is flat, and it will connect fine to the 0.5 watt Freeloader Supercharger, so that that wasn't a waste of money.
