What is an inverter?
An inverter is a converter that connects to a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery that is usually connected to a car, a truck or a solar panel. The inverter can connect to the battery either through a car accessory plug or by clipping directly to the battery. A mains powered device can then be plugged directly into the inverter’s AC socket. Inverters vary in capacity and can power devices of up to a specific wattage. Inverters can be split into two categories: pure sinewave and modified sinewave.

What makes this inverter unique?
This Maplin inverter connects to the car battery using the car accessory socket or the included alligator clips. Its compact design allows you to place the inverter where it is needed without it becoming a hazard. The inverter can power a device up to 300W such as a laptop, a phone charger or a portable games console. It is highly efficient, converting over 85% of its energy into output power. The inverter includes shutdown protection to power down the inverter if the battery power drops below a certain level.

What is the difference between pure sinewave and modified sinewave?
All household mains sockets output a sinewave along the cable to transfer power from the source, such as the battery or socket the product is plugged in to. This product is a pure sinewave inverter which produces the same quality energy as a household mains socket, unlike a modified sinewave inverter which produces an approximation. A pure sinewave inverter can power electronics such as motors, power tools or clocks, including products with more sensitive component parts. Unlike a modified sinewave inverter, there will be no electrical interference using a pure sinewave inverter, improving a user’s experience with this type of product.

What size dc cables are supplied with this device as a 300 watt inverter running at 300w will demand a current of 25Amps. No cigar lighter socket could cope with that and the croc clip cables look too small? Fire in the offing?

Asked by: Cornish chewey
The cables supplied work fine with the item. Unfortunately, the size of the cable is not included in the specifications.

Can I use a solar panel to recharge?

Asked by: Tintin30
This inverter draws it's power from a 12v battery. (typically a car, solar or leisure battery). It is possible to use a solar panel to recharge the battery that you are using, but the inverter itself does not have anything that can be "recharged"

I have bought one of these and would like to know what the different beeps mean as it does not explain in the manual. Whilst using my laptop it has started making a long constant beep but does not cut out. What does this mean?

I have just purchased this item, tested it in my van, all good but just wandered whether the fan is meant to come on straight away or does it just kick in when needed

Asked by: Q2903
The fan cooling is temperature controlled, so may not kick in until required, increasing in speed as the internal temperature increases.

can I plug 3 socket extension lead into the inverter plug socket to power 3 items at the same time?

Asked by: trevor
This would entirely depend on the items you are wanting to power. If the total wattage is less than 300 then yes.

will this inverter supply 300W using the 12V plug, or should it be connected directly via the clip leads for this application?

Asked by: Robbie
This would provide 300W when using the 12V plug.
