What is an inverter?
An inverter is a converter that connects to a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery that is usually connected to a car, a truck or a solar panel. The inverter can connect to the battery either through a car accessory plug or by clipping directly to the battery. A mains powered device can then be plugged directly into the inverter’s AC socket. Inverters vary in capacity and can power devices of up to a specific wattage. Inverters can be split into two categories: pure sinewave and modified sinewave.

What makes this inverter unique?
This Maplin inverter connects directly to the vehicle’s battery using alligator clips while being positioned, using the included mounting holes, to keep the inverter out of the way. It can power a device up to 600W, such as a small television, a DVD player or a laptop. It is highly efficient, converting over 85% of its energy into output power. It is fitted with a 2.1A socket to charge a wide range of items such as a Smartphone, MP3 player or Tablet while keeping the mains socket available for a different device. The inverter includes shutdown protection to power down the inverter if the battery power drops below a certain level.

What is the difference between pure sinewave and modified sinewave?
All household mains sockets output a sinewave along the cable to transfer power from the source, such as the battery or plug to the product that is plugged in. This product is a modified sinewave inverter which produces a stepped approximation of a pure sinewave inverter which makes it easier to produce. A modified sinewave inverter can power devices such as laptops, printers and chargers, although some items may pick up interference from the inverter. A solution for this is to upgrade to a pure sinewave inverter, such as these 12V pure sinewave inverters. A pure sinewave inverter is used to power sensitive electronic devices such as power motors, power tools, clocks or microwaves.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well, full 600w no problem. My fault but I got the input polarity reversed and blew all 3 - 15 amp flat car type fuses. It would be better if there was a trip system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stumbled upon this in the Salisbury Maplin store. I live in Malawi, Africa and we have frequent electricity blackouts. The inverter has worked it's magic for over a year now faithfully. We simply bought a car battery and a battery charger. We've had to change the fuses twice (all of them - 3 - each time) but they are readily available in car parts shops and cheap.

Confused about the 24 volt. Can this item be used with a standard 12 volt leisure battery or not. I have read a report from a Maplin member of staff saying no it can't and I have spoken to a Maplin member of staff who says yes it can. Whom shall I believe

Asked by: Ian W
This requires a 24VDC input supply to operate, so would not work from a single 12V leisure battery. For that you would need the 12V inverter like the following; http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-12v-modified-sinewave-600w-inverter-a18fg

Hi, What is the operational input voltage range for this unit? When does the high/low voltage shut-off alarm operate? Thanks.

Asked by: Dominic
The item needs a 24V DC power supply directly from a battery. the alarm would sound if it got any more or less than this
