Rated 4 out of 5 by from This air cooler really does the trick if you know how to make the most of it. To begin with, I didn't rate it much in terms of having a cooling effect. The trick is ice, and lots of it! If you fill the tank with ice (and the provided ice packs), then pour over chilled water (ideally water that's been in the fridge for a day or two), and let the machine do its work, you'll notice the difference immediately. It won't cool a big room down, but if you point it directly at yourself, the cooling effect is much greater than that of a standard fan. The blower is powerful and it isn't too loud considering. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. As said previously, to get the most from this machine, use it cleverly!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wholly inadequate instructions compounded by seeming duplication of controls. Mine came with what I thought was a "new plastic" smell that would dissapear with use.It now has the whiff of a mildly flavoured fish. Had a small (10ft x 10ft) room to cool only minimal cooling effect (maybe 1.2 degrees) after operating for an hour. Would like to return for refund but outside of return window as I was trying to work out the fishy smell! You get what you pay for I guess but would recommend a straight up fan.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from For the price this wasn't bad. This unit is fairly audible, not overly quiet. The water tank does not pull right out, so to change the water you have to tip the whole unit up - not very easy. You need to change the water as it starts to smell/turn green/brown. This did cool my small living room by a couple of degrees. This is what i expected a unit of this price and type to do. In that respect, it did its job. Sadly after 1 week the unit has got noticeably louder, and i will be taking it back as faulty. Not too impressed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This seemed like a good buy in this heat. Do not be fooled. It does not cool even with ice and ice packs installed and the unit is noisier than an real airconditioner. The fan power is awful too. Either 1 save up and buy a proper air con or 2 save some money and buy a decent large fan of which maplin sell very good ones. This is the worst thing I have ever bought from the usually excellent Maplin. When I took it back to return it, in front of me in the queue were another couple returning theirs and saying the same thing!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I agree with the previous review. The cooler option is having no noticeable effect in my 14'x14' room in which the temperature keeps creeping up, now 26.8 C up from 26.3 an hour ago. Not sure if it's slowed the increase from normal though. The controls are somewhat confusing and the instructions don't clarify them at all. There's one big dial on top for heat or cool - ok I understand that. Then there's 3 buttons marked 1 to 3 and one marked off. Can't notice any effect from the 3 buttons. One dial has Off, Cool, Anion and Swing. Does this mean it doesn't Cool when set to Swing? The other dial has Anion, Fan, Off, Low, High. Fan seems to be a lower 'blast' option to Low, so confusing. And, yes, it 'blasts' out air, so no subtle option. I keep swapping ice blocks regularly and putting in cold water, but to no effect. This is my first day of use and for the price I'll perservere a bit longer. Oh, and it's very noisy!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I have to agree with past reviews. The dials are very confusing and I can't seem to get cool air from it. Only seems to be blowing warm air about. The temperature of my room has risen and not cooled. Heater seems to work no problem. Blows out hot air but not cool air.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I've been using the unit for over a month now and it's great. I've been using it in the bedroom a lot 'cos I can't sleep when it's too hot and it has definitely cooled the room very well. My 10sqm room is noticeably colder. It does go through a lot of water on the cooling settings and the instructions are largely useless but it's not hard to get the hang of. Haven't tested the heating side of it, but so far, very happy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poorly designed - just ok as a fan First off the design of the unit is poor - the water tray does not come out fully and it is difficult to see the fill lines. Also the remaining water in the tray does seem to gather dust and other dirt after use but there is no easy way to clean it given that the tray cant be removed! the spanner supplied to screw on the wheels was utterly useless so make sure you have a better spanner to avoid cursing while assembling! The controls are not the most intuitive, you cant seem to have oscillating movement with the cooling function! Some of the controls also seem to have no effect not sure what low and high do (unless to do with heating which I haven't tried). If you have the unit blowing directly at you and have filled the water tray with cool water and the ice packs then it does indeed have a cooling effect. However it does nothing to actually cool the room other than by fractions of a degree. If you could use the oscillating feature whilst cooling this would be better, but you cant? I guess at this price you don't expect an air conditioner but as a fan that cools (only if you are in the blast zone) then its ok.
