Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy network setup I have been through a few DVRs and the network set up s have varied from painful to impossible (Sentient). When I set this one up, I initially thought that they had left out the network instructions. However the Swann software for both PC and remote mobile viewing are excellent and are simply plug and play. No need to mess around with IPs, port forwarding, DDNS etc, etc. Just scan a QR code and its done. Highly recommended.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not all its cracked up to be If all you want is a basic 4-chan recorder that you are not going to network then this is ok for continuous recording. If on the other hand if you are interested in the more advanced functionality for motion detection, emailing alerts with pictures, remote access then I would be wary of this. After trying two units that failed to give a picture over HDMI I realized that this issue was that the default resolution of 1024 prevents (at least on both of my new Panasonic) TVs from working. Changing the box to output in 1080p resolved this. So issue one is none friendly/functioning HDMI default resolution. Issue two. The unit is set to connect to most home networks via a cable. DHCP, SNTP and upnp are all on. Great, well nearly. If you home router also has plug and play enabled (typically defaults on) this will allow the box to map an open port (default 9000) internet facing. This is supposed to make accessing the unit over the internet easy. It does this very well, too well. Anyone scanning routers will spot 9000 is open and, according to several internet articles, this port accepts commands with no authentication - so remote viewing, reconfig and erasing are childs play. There are other reports suggesting that the box (at a linux level) can be taken over and used and a spring board to attack other devices on your network. Issue three. The remote software initially looks great until you start to spot a few cracks, like playing footage can only play forward 1-8x speed, but no rewind. There is a slider to show progress, but it seldom (tempted to say never) works for jumping forward to backwards. Also, after watching several clips the footage starts to play as if it is corrupt and freezes or has flashing blocks on it. I discovered that stopping the program and opening it again would work for a little while. iPhone and iPad, this offers remote view (not playback), It works good on the LAN, but only a fool would let this box talk to the internet directly. Accessing via a VPN on my network seemed to work ok, although some of the camera feeds would stall and the only solution is a full disconnect and reconnect. Issue four. The documentation is not very clear, it appears that you can set a camera for 24x7 record, with motion detection, with a specific schedule that will flag an alarm if motion is detected. This alarm can then send an email alert, and optionally attach a snap. I configured this using a google account. It worked, great. Then it stops working. No clues. If you remotely access the device and opt for a reboot everything works again, maybe for a day or two. I set the box to schedule a daily reboot - it does this (according to the log) but is doesn't fix the fault. motion detection does not happen, recordings dont happen and emails are not sent unless you go onto the remote menu and ask for a reboot - why this is different from a scheduled reboot is a mystery. Issue five. Footage recorded appears to be in a 'special' h264 format. Special since there does not appear to be any codecs / video players that will play it other than the one supplied by Swann (which is very basic). There is an app the converts to avi, and is does this so fast with minimal size difference that it makes me suspect that it is already AVI with a different header. Getting the files remotely is hard, since more than 50% of the time the download option appears to freeze. issue six. Telnet port 23 is open, this is for a terminal connection - but it appears that no one (other than presumably swann and the wrong people) know what the credentials are to log in. Root & a several suggestions fail to work but I would rather the details shared (so you can then change them) or the port/service switched off. Ge...

Bought it from the Cramlington store after detailed discussions on the pros and cons of the various alternative systems with the very helpful and knowledgeable staff there, and in particular, a chap called "Kev". I was also assured that if I encountered any problems the Maplin staff were there for advice. So far that offer has not been needed, it worked "straight out of the box" the set up wizard was easy to follow, I tested it for 3 days indoors before installing it permanently outside. That was 4 days ago both cameras give excellent pictures in daylight mode but one is proving slightly more motion sensitive in night mode. I think this is possibly because there is a street lamp at the end of my drive which is more or less opposite the camera position and the light is causing some "Flickering". Anyway, its not a huge problem and I'm currently trying to reduce the number of spurious alerts by a combination of adjusting the downward angle of the camera from the light source and tweaking the sensitivity settings - hope that works. That said, its a great piece of kit for the money and seems to serve my needs well.

How do you change the time on the cameras e.g. When the clocks go back or forwards. Do they reset themselves. Because my cameras are 1 hour ahead??

If your device is connected to the internet you can ask it to check the time against the online atomic clock using the Network Time Protocol (NTP) settings. what is diameter of the BNC cable to camera? how many number of cables are connected to each camera? will the recorder must always be on to store videos? could you tell me when will the led flashes? is it motion detected led and camera?

The BNC are approx 22mm wide, there are 2 cables per camera. The recorder must always be on to record. The LED flashes when the hard drive is active, there is no LED for motion detection, but the unit does support this.

Can you confirm the power consumption of the cameras and of the DVR unit.  I am concerned of the cost of running specifically the DVR 24/7 and, all things considered, whether it is better to purchase only the cameras in their use as a deterrent.
