If you're looking for a media centre to store your whole collection, then look no further than this Synology DS214Play. Designed to be the ultimate media centre, it still functions as a high performance NAS drive. The two bays can be populated with up to 4TB in each bay* (this model is supplied without hard drives), for a potential total storage size of 8TB. The dual core processor and 1GB RAM makes the hardware specifications in line with the top NAS drives of today, giving you a read and write speed of 111MB/s and 101MB/s respectively (under RAID 1). Setting up the various features of the NAS is simple thanks to the easy to navigate NAS operating system (OS).
The Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) is the web-based OS that comes with every Synology NAS. The built-in package centre lets you download and install the packages/apps that fit your unique needs. Whether you want to share files on the cloud, share pictures on an online album, have downloads be automatically started for you or set up a VPN environment, these can all be done with a few clicks. Synology DSM helps you maximise productivity and keep you in complete control of your personal cloud, with minimal fuss. Can I automatically backup my computer to this NAS?
Both Windows and Mac computers can be backed up to this Synology NAS drive. Windows computers can use the Cloud Station application that is available within the package centre. Similar to Dropbox, the Cloud Station lets you keep files locally on the computer or on your mobile and then automatically syncs it to the NAS. Mac users can use Time Machine to back up their system to the NAS. You can also press one button to copy data from a connected SD card or USB to the NAS drive.
Losing any files, whether it’s backups or important files, can be frustrating and there are a number of ways you can avoid that. The first is RAID configurations – RAID 1 can be configured for your NAS setup and provides you with the redundancy needed by simultaneously writing identical data on both drives. This means you essentially lose one drive’s worth of storage space. You can also use the Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR), which is an automated RAID system that maximises the use of your hard drive while providing you with data redundancy. The great thing about SHR is you don’t need to know anything about the different RAID configurations to get the right mixture of storage and redundancy for you.
Setting up external sources to backup the data stored on this NAS drive is an alternative way to ensure your data won’t be lost. You can send the backup to a connected external USB or eSATA drive, for a locally based backup. You could also backup to another Synology NAS or rysnc compatible server. This gives you a safe off-site backup of your data and files, which would otherwise be lost if your Synology NAS and the location around it were to be damaged by a disaster. Integration with cloud services such as Amazon S3 and Glacier, gives you the ability to have an off-site backup without needing another NAS drive. What apps can I use with this NAS drive?
Configure this NAS drive for accessing over the Internet with minimal effort, through the QuickConnect package. Once setup, you can access and control your NAS drive through the various mobile apps, including DS photo, DS audio and DS video for multimedia access, DS download, DS file and DS cloud for file download/access/synchronisation.
DS download lets you manage download tasks made through the Download Station package. The package provides you with a 24/7 download portal, where you can turn off your computer and let the NAS drive download files from multiple file hosting sites directly to your centralised storage. An auto unzip service also extracts compressed files to your Synology NAS, so you can use the files straight away. Can I play my media files stored on the NAS to other devices?
As a certified DLNA media server, once connected to a wireless router, you can stream music, pictures and videos to DLNA-compliant devices without the need for pre-configuration. This gives you the ability to enjoy your media library on the big screen or with better speakers. Through DS video you can even stream your video to a TV through Apple TV, using AirPlay. The built-in transcoding engine converts video files that are originally unsupported by the media player into a compatible format, with this engine able to transcode video up to 1080p. This gives you the ability to enjoy your media collection no matter what format it is under. What other features are there?
Users can be added with their access, what groups they are part of, volume quotas (how much space they can take up on the NAS drive) and what applications they can use, all configurable through the DSM. Support for iSCSI lets you create a virtual hard drive that your computer believes is connected to it locally. This provides you with an ongoing off-site storage location for you to use.
