Why would an access point be better than a wireless repeater?
If you are looking to extend your network coverage outdoors and want to be able to scale up in the future, then this Ubiquiti access point (Manufacturer's Code: UAP-Outdoor5) is perfect for you. Its unlimited scalability allows you to build wireless networks as big or small as needed. Extending your wireless coverage can be achieved with wireless repeaters too, but the main advantage of an access point has is that it does not have to repeat a wireless signal. It connects directly to the router, allowing you to obtain better speeds and bandwidths and helps to improve your general wireless connection.

What speeds could I expect to get?
Operating on a 5Ghz frequency, you could experience speeds of up to 300Mbps and thanks to the omnidirectional antennas you could get up to 184 metres of coverage. The removable antennas can be replaced with a dual-polarity antenna, leading to a potential increase in the gain achieved by the access point and therefore the overall coverage.

What is the UniFi controller software?
Instead of having a system to control multiple access points (APs) separately, with the free UniFi controller software you have the ability to monitor and control thousands of UniFi APs in one place. The software can be installed on any PC, Mac or Linux machine within the network and once installed can be accessed via a web browser. A zero handoff roaming feature grants users the ability to seamlessly move between their nearest UniFi APs and still be connected to the same wireless network.

To help with the monitoring of different APs, you can view a visual representation of your wireless network on a map of your site that you upload or through Google Maps. Four different SSIDs provide you with four separate networks to establish, which means you could set up one for employees or personal use and another for guests. The software supports guest portals, so that different bandwidth rates, limitation on total data usage and duration of use can be implemented. By creating custom package offering for guests, and with the built-in support for billing using major credit cards you can also charge for the different packages.

How easy is it to setup?
The weather resistant UniFi outdoor 5Ghz can be installed outdoors and comes supplied with installation kits for either wall or pole set ups. An Ethernet cable is needed to run in between the router and the access point to provide the wireless connection and power, with a Power over Ethernet (PoE) adapter included. Additionally, the Uni-Fi software controller needs to be installed onto an on premise PC, Mac, or Linux machine; in a private cloud; or a public cloud service, for the access point to work. Once you have installed the access point, connected it to the router and have the Uni-Fi software controller running, an enterprise Wi-Fi network can be quickly configured without any need for special training.

With 10/100 Mb wired connection I question how this device can provide 300Mb wireless connections

Asked by: Paul
The wireless router inside is capable of up to 300Mbps between devices connected to its WiFi signal, connection speeds to an external network would depend on the cabled connection and your own internet speeds.
