USB Digital Microscope with 300x Magnification

• Digital microscope with the ability to capture images, videos and watch live from your PC, laptop or Mac
• Explore the minute details of the world with this 300x magnification digital microscope
• 1.3 megapixel camera gives you a 1280 x 1024 pixel image on-screen
• Compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8
• Standing at 110mm high and 34mm in diameter, it won’t take up a lot of room on your desk and comes in a sleek black design with a stand

What can I see with this digital microscope?
Place the microscope directly over or on the sample to get the highest possible 300x magnification and slowly pull it away, adjusting the focus as you go, to get back to 10x. The minimum focusing distance is 10mm – so you’ll have enough room to see. Simply place the microscope on top of your sample over an area of approximately 855mm² for close-up views.

How easy is this microscope to use?
This microscope couldn’t be easier to use. Simply plug the attached USB lead into your PC and install the software, then you can start seeing the detail of your samples. The included stand helps you keep the microscope steady while the six LEDs can illuminate your work as you view.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from When I ordered this I assumed from the description that I would get continuous magnification across the range 10x to 200x. However as a previous reviewer has pointed out, the magnification and focus controls are one and the same and so it is only possible to get continuous focussing up to about 70x, by moving the microscope from about 80mm for 10x on the scale to just about touching the workbench at 70x on the scale. At this point the microscope is as close as it can get and it is not in focus again until 200x. In practice this is unlikely to be a problem, but it should be pointed out in the product description and the instructions. Apart from that, the image quality is excellent and the supplied software, including some measuring software, works very well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty good considering it's price! Note for Chris, tested on window 7 64 bit and it works ok. But forced compatibility before installation. That is: in explorer--> for each file (.exe) --> right click --> select compatibility --> then select XP (service pack 3) before click to install. After select the icon on desktop (or paste it there) and again repeat procedure. At least it worked for me (it gave me an error for 1 file in amcap but I ignored it and went on). For fire viewer close amcap to free driver. Obviously worked for me ... might not for you...do at your own risk.... good luck

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Firstly, this unit will work under Windows 7 & XP... I have tested both and no drivers are necessary. It will also work as a webcam/handheld camera, although the depth of field is not great (as expected) and you will get a magnified (linear 2-3x) image. Note that you will only get 2 focus points across the magnification range, so don't expect continuous magnification control. The magnification and focus controls are one and the same. The connector is located on the side of the unit, which makes it impossible to use as an endoscope in confined locations.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well constructed, with separate USB lead, LED button cycles through 3 brightnesses and off, photo taken with push-button on top or via computer, focuses from infinity (eg TV or well-illuminated source) to very close, recessed focus knob is quite stiff but eases a little with use. Takes stills, movies and time-lapse. Reasonable info leaflet. Does not appear to dismantle easily for servicing or lubrication. No stand but better to get a firm stand than the lightweight version supplied with other USB microscopes. Comes with Vista CD and extra utilities. Good value unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PrevX (antimalware) grabbed the autorun setup.exe as bad. But ran the driver install direct and all went well. An amazingly good product for the price, with excellent resolution. Needs a stand arranging somehow for best results. It actually makes a good telescope as well! Since it's a webcam, it can be used in messaging programs to share images with colleagues as well. Very good value.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use. Decent enough software. I think it's best to ignore statements like "300x magnification". In my experience, the microscope resolution bottoms out on objects approaching 20 micron in size (half a human hair width). For science projects and messing about with the kids at home it's perfect. For industrial inspection, I would invest in a purpose built optical microscope.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I thought I could use the compatibility settings to make this work on my Windows 7 computer, but sadly this was not to be :-( The software appears to be written in Visual Basic 6, which has some compatibility issues with Win7 anyway, so the product isn't at fault here. It doesn't say it's Windows 7 compliant in any case. It is a shame though I can't use my own capture software to access the camera, but this *might* be because I have a webcam installed anyway, so this is seen as the primary capture device. There IS however a simple capture program on the disk which isn't installed by default, you have to hunt for it by opening the CD drive in My Computer and opening the "1.3M Digital Microscope - Driver" folder. The unit itself is well built, the focusing/zooming isn't too problematic and the stiffness of the zoom/focus collar means it won't slip while being used. I've used the simple capture program to look at a variety of things with great interest, and the picture quality is good. There seems to be no lens distortion or aberration. All in all a good buy, but the software side of things could be better. A website from which updated drivers and software could be downloaded would be a massive plus

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I purchased one of these as a present for my eight year old grandaughter. I bought it several weeks in advance of her birthday and decided to check it out a few days beforehand. Although it claims to require Vista or XP operating systems, I thought I would try it on my Windows 7 based Toshiba laptop. The acompanying 'operating instructions' leave a lot to be desired. After a lot of guesswork, I realised that being a 'camera' the microscope was in contention with the laptop's built in Chicony webcam. When I figured out how to temporarily disable the internal webcam, the microscope began to work. However, after a few minutes, the six built in LEDS failed to stay on. I then repeated the whole process on both an XP based system and a Vista based system, with no luck. I took the unit back to the Maplin branch I purchased it from and despite the intervening period of time, they gave me a no quibble exchange unit. The replacement now seems to work fine and for the money it is pretty impresive. Bryan Webster
