Product details

Velleman IR Beam Break Detector Solder kit

• Create an alarm that triggers when someone enters a room or when there is movement in a certain area
• Two units create a IR beam and activate when the beam is broken
• A great introduction to soldering, with 20 parts
• Requires two 9V batteries (not included, Order Code L46AL)

What can I create with this kit?
Use this beam break kit (manufacturers code MK120) to build a handy little alarm with a sensor that triggers a speaker and LED warning. This kit is a great way to demonstrate the IR beams used in some burglar alarms, door chimes and smoke alarms. You can combine the sensors with other kits to trigger a response. When something moves between the transmitter and receiver, the beam is broken and the alarm is triggered. You could use this to prompt a camera to take a photo or make a light switch on. With 40 parts and two boards, this is a fun and rewarding kit for everyone.

What can I learn from this IR beam kit?
You can practise soldering and learn about electronics and circuits with this IR beam kit. It uses resistors, capacitors, transistors, LEDs and speaker – and you can learn how they are connected in a circuit. IR projects a beam between units and offers a good example of basic wireless technology. This is a great kit to expand and experiment with. This kit requires a soldering iron and solder and may require wire cutters.

How easy is this kit to solder?
Simple to solder, this kit is ideal for beginners learning about electronics or for those looking for a trigger to add to other projects. Putting the kit together is just the start of your adventure. You could use external material to create an enclosure for the kit to protect the electronics or make it blend into the environment. This kit comes with a holder for a 9V (PP3) battery (not included), which is needed for the receiver and transmitter. A DC jack is required to attach a power supply. This kit is not recommended for outdoor use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I found the kit ideal for modification into an infared camera shutter release for wild life photography. The modification was a simple, I just substituted the buzzer in the kit for a maplin relay (code n16aw) and conected a 3.5 jack (so as to plug the shutter cable on my 7d into) to the gate on the pin. now I am taking great pictures as wild life trips the beam.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I bought this kit, I wish I hadn't! I attempted to assemble it but found the copper track came away from the board as soon as any heat was applied to it. I was unable to assemble the kit for the track falling off the board and leaving components floating and flopping around, the instructions are poor and somewhat misleading. I gave it my best and I've assembled other similar kits with no trouble before; but this kit ended up in the bin, I wouldn't recommend this kit to anyone, poor quality tracking that comes away from the board easily.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from i would definitely agree with the other 1-star reviewer as the instructions where difficult to comprehend meaning i had to take about 5 resistors off one board and when i tried to solder the correct resistors onto the board, about half of the copper pads came off! Maplin is my favourite shop but to be honest,i think i have been let down on this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sensor I bought this kit a couple of years ago and forgot I had it. There it was, at the bottom of my 'gash' box. I assembled it and it worked first time. What I want to do now is to connect it remotely to an alarm that will stay on once it has been triggered by the IR receiver. Steve6519 has given me inspiration - nice one mate! If anyone has any good ideas for the remote coupling I would be grateful... Thanks

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked for us... Two single sided boards in the kit, no problems with pads coming off, the silkscreen printing is a little approximate but legible. The instructions are basic but we followed them with no trouble. Working now and "guarding" one of the kids bedrooms.
