Centralise your media files and access them from anywhere
Keep your personal collection of pictures, videos and music in a safe place without a monthly fee, with this WD My Cloud 4TB NAS drive (manufacturer’s code: WDBCTL0040HWT-EESN). A storage capacity of 4TB gives you the ability to store approximately 132 hours of 1080p video at 30fps, 1,000 two-hour DVD films, 1.28 million digital photos or 66,400 hours of digital music. If you need to increase your storage space in the future simply connect an external USB drive to one of the two USB 3.0 ports for an immediate upgrade.

What are some of the backups I can do with this NAS drive?
Set automatic backups for your Windows or Apple Mac computer with WD SmartWare Pro for Windows and Apple’s own Time Machine program for Macs. Backups can be set to either save whole folders/all information on the computer or to backup only when changes have been made. This gives you the choice between a slower but more thorough backup and a quicker backup.

To make sure any backups are completely safe, a second copy (safe points) can be created and saved to an external location on your network or on an attached USB drive. If the My Cloud device fails, the snap shot of settings and any backups made at the specific time the safe point was created allows you to easily recover your data.

What are some of the apps I can use with this?
The dedicated My Cloud app, which is available for Apple iOS and Android smart devices, lets you upload to and view files from your personal cloud anywhere. This helps to free up space on your smart devices, so you can install more apps and take more pictures and videos. You can also transfer files between your Dropbox account and the My Cloud through the My Cloud app, giving you the ability to integrate your public cloud account with your own private cloud.

Can I send files wirelessly to smart devices?
Stream your music/video collections or your travel pictures to a smart TV, media player, speaker, games console or any other DLNA or UPnP compatible device connected to the same network as the My Cloud. As My Cloud is DLNA and UPnP certified it can act as a server for each of these clients to access.

Can more than one person have access to this?
Multiple user accounts can be set up and given access to their own folder within the WD My Cloud. You could also give them access to shared folders too. This makes it great for anyone who wants to share the NAS with multiple employees or just with friends and family.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok but ... The media features of this device bog the CPU down making it severely under perform when loading data on to. Don't expect to be copying a movie onto it, and watching one at the same time. It has also locked up twice, when under heavy load. In the end, I turned off the media features on each share to improve performance. The Web interface is nice and easy to use. ssh access is provided at the risk of invalidating warranty, but nice to have when you want to scp or rsync data to the device. You get around 3.5TB of usable space after the O/S and media stuff is taken into account.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet and efficient I purchased this as my wife did not know where things were in the various clouds accounts I have - this turned out to be the ideal solution. Got the item, unwrapped and plugged in. Followed the instructions, these could be made a little easier, but they were ok. Switched on let the machine do its stuff, i.e. updates. Added 2 accounts , added folders e.g music, pictures etc. Gave details to my partner of her 'account. In the respective folders dropped all my music and pictures in to the folders. Job done the drive just does it thing. Sits behind the telly, no noise no interference. Take a picture on your phone, it 'magically' just adds to the correct folder. Good bit of kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent drive, does need a little technical knowhow Bought this drive as my first cloud drive, so was a little nervous going in even though I'm usually quite adept at things like this. Set up was so simple it was scary. Plugged it into the router, turned it on and within a minute the shares were available and the DNLA streamers in the house were happily pulling content off it. The dashboard is very easy to use, very clear and very intuitive and informative. Setting up shares and users is very easy, and you can control who sees what folders and which folders have media streaming. You can expand it with another USB drive, doesn't need to be a cloud unit. The only downsides I have encountered are that it doesn't have the full manual in the box or on the drive, and it is worth a read, but you can get it off their site. Setting up private password protected shares is easy, but getting access to them isn't quite as straightforward (or I am doing something wrong) and it is here even the manual is a bit sketchy. Cloud services are easy and simple to set up. i quickly gained access to the files on my tablets, phones and remote locations away from the network which is just what I wanted. I highly recommend this if you want a good, fast and easy to use NAS, media streaming and cloud storage, but do be prepared to spend a little time getting to know it once it has been set up, it is worth that little extra effort.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value, so far so good When looking at a shared network storage for home use, wdmycloud 4tb looked a value for money solution. I found the set up a little confusing and would have liked a little more help and guidance when selecting options and use cases.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very Slow Probably better to use a cheap PC, and map a drive to it. As good as a fast one and no more money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible We bought on of these and our network is not super fast but its fast. But still this would have tons of errors, be slow and the apps were terrible to. So we ended up taking the 4Tb hard drive out and putting it in a proper server and it now works perfectly.

This storage is connected to the router with an ethernet cable so access is via the internet, correct ???? If the internet/router failed can it be plugged into a desktop computer so there is still access to data as an emergencey.

Asked by: beach2far
No, this item will need a working router to access the drive ( the internet can fail and you will still be able to access it locally if you still have a working router. )

I have a my book live duo, and am thinking of buying this additional NAS server, to connect to my home system (in a separate location) to effectively make sure we don't loose content if one is stolen. Can I set this NAS server to back up the first one?

Asked by: justinb
You could manually backup from one connected drive to the other over your home network. The drive does not have any automated function for doing this.

if I connect an external drive via the USB on this device, can I use it to mirror the internal drive - thus creating a resilient storage solution?

Asked by: IanD
This is not designed as an automatic function, however, once the additional drive is mapped on the network through your PC, you could use it as a backup for the NAS itself by manually copying the files across when changes are made.
