If you want to add your own hard drives and have the great features that the My Cloud EX4 has, then this is the network attached storage device will be perfect for you (manufacturer’s code: WDBWWD0000NBK-EESN). Four hard drives can be added to this NAS drive and the Maximum capacity supported is 6TB for each one, giving you a potential capacity of 24TB. This provides you with the flexibility to install the amount of storage for you and gives you the option to increase it in the future.

Whether you are looking to back up a Windows or an Apple Mac computer, this WD EX4 has you covered. WD SmartWare Pro can be used for Windows computers and thanks to the compatibility with Apple Time Machine, Apple’s own backup application can be used. Backups can be arranged for specific dates and times, with a choice between whole folder/computer backups to take place or incremental backups (where a backup only takes place when a change has been made).
Any connected USB devices can be used as a dedicated backup location for your NAS drive as well. Integration with Amazon S3 and ElephantDrive cloud services also means you can backup data stored on the My Cloud EX4 to the cloud. If you own another My Cloud EX4, you could remotely backup data to it, no matter where it may be. These backup options not only allow you to backup data from computers, but provide you with a contingency too, should data be lost due to drive failures. What apps are available for this NAS drive?
The My Cloud mobile (available for Android and Apple iOS devices) and desktop apps can be used to upload and access files stored on the My Cloud EX4 remotely. Other third party apps can be installed on the NAS drive, such as Plex or WordPress. Plex is an app that you can use to organise your media files and stream them to displays. Since it can be downloaded on a range of different displays such as Smart TVs, computers, tables and more, you can stream videos or music stored on the NAS. As a default, http downloader, FTP, P2P and web file viewer are already installed. These apps allow you to automate and schedule downloads/backups to happen through a web link, share files and view the content of the NAS via the dashboard. Can I stream data to other devices?
The DLNA and UPnP compatibility that the EX4 has, means you aren’t restricted to streaming media files to just devices that can install Plex. As long as another DLNA compatible device, for example game consoles and speakers, is connected to the same network, you can stream your collection of music, pictures and videos to it. And with iTunes support you can stream your music collection too. What other features does this have?
Users can be created and given access to the My Cloud EX4. Portions of the NAS storage can also be assigned to users or groups of users, allowing them to utilise it as a server. To avoid interrupting the NAS drive an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) can be connect to it via USB or network, which will give you temporary power should the mains ever stop working.
The support of iSCSI provides you with the ability to make virtual drives for your computer to use (they believe that the created drive is a local hard drive). This allows you to manage storage over long distances, keeping data safe offsite rather than locally. A LCD screen on the front of the NAS drive gives you access to the status of it, with the health of the drives, fan speed, available space and more viewable.
