Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just purchased this, working brilliantly. It works out of the box with Windows Media Center, running on Windows 7. I, however, wanted it controlling XBMC, which did take some time setting up but I knew this going in. Some controls still worked without any effort, but volume was broken along with some other buttons, and pressing th Green Button would still cause WMC to open. Might I point out, I did know all this going in so it didn't come as a surprise, I wasn't expecting it to work flawlessly with XBMC. Anyway, used a program called EventGhost and a plugin called XBMCRepeater, got it all set up and working and now the remote behaves just the way I want, with no interuption from WMC.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As a follow up to Simon's review, this remote (a Formosa21 genuine Win7 MCE model) now works "out-of-the-box" on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneric and therefore MythBuntu 11.10, as they ship with LiRC 0.9.0 and the latest mceusb module. Good Times!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This remote doesn't give itself the credit it deserves... I was worried as the box states it works with windows 7 and I'm running windows 8, however i took the risk and it works perfectly with windows 8. The remote is light weight but is nothing fancy, buttons are very small and quite close together, Great if your on a budget but I would like it to do more. It is missing functions like opening the start menu or a TAB button. However it is only designed for WMC so I cant complain! THIS WORKS GREAT WITH XBMC TOO! - Most functions work e.g. play pause FF RW

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice, solid & responsive **BUT** badly laid out and unintuitive. Easy to pick up and point it the wrong way. You need to keep looking at it to make sure you are holding it correctly and pressing the correct buttons. I bought this to replace my worn out Microsoft remote and its a poor cousin but at least it uses the same receiver so you can ditch the one supplied with this remote.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This remote works well, except for 2 problems: 1) The red button does not appear to send the correct code. I have 3 remotes (one is a Microsoft original, and another is a programmable I programmed from the first one). The red button works fine on those two, but not on the Maplin one. 2) Sometimes, when the computer goes to sleep, you can wake it up with the remote, but it doesn't respond to any keys afterwards, until you unplug the receiver and plug it in again. This is clearly either a problem with the receiver, or with the computer (proper HP PC, running Windows 8).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent bit of kit, the most reliable thing on my media centre. Only issue is having the adaptor somewhere where it can see the signal from the remote, but it's surprisingly effective at getting there. This has outlasted 2 media centre PCs and is still going strong, and is better than newer, slinkier controls that have come my way more recently.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Been using it for a couple of weeks now and it is been a very good buy. It picks up signal from all over the room and all of the buttons work and it doesn't seem to operate any other remote stuff (tv, sky etc) which some other WMC remotes do. I find it best to have the remote mid-height and facing up so it provides the best coverage. I would recommend it to everyone!

Can the remote switch on the laptop? Or does the laptop have to already be on before the remote can operate?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Remote will only operate the PC or Laptop once it is powered on. You can however use the Power Button on the remote to enable/disable the PC or Laptop's Sleep Mode.

In response to a person's question about the media centre remote control working on windows 7 when it states vista, it does work, you just may need to reprogram some buttons using something like intelliremote. Regards IT ENGINEER
