Your questions answered

Where did Black Friday come from?

The event dates back to the Great Depression of 1939, when American retailers petitioned the President to move Thanksgiving to an earlier date so that the Christmas shopping season would be longer. There is some ambiguity as to where the term “Black Friday” came from. Some say the day was named by the Philadelphia Police Department in the 1960s, to describe the chaos the event caused in cities as shoppers descended in their droves to find the best deals. Others say it refers to the day shops move from in the red ‘into the black’ – meaning they have made enough money to cover their costs for the year.

Top tips for Black Friday

Be prepared

If you’re hitting the shops, find out what time they open and how
to get there. It’s guaranteed to be very busy, so if you’re driving park
a little way out of the retail area so you can find a space.

Wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and take a bottle of water and even
some snacks if you’re going to be out all day. Long queues and crowds
work up an appetite!

Do your research

Some retailers may drop hints or even announce which products
they’re discounting in the run up to Black Friday. Take note of
the best deals and offers so you don’t forget on the day.

Make a list

Write down the items you really want to get at a discount,so you
don’t get distracted by other bargains on the day. Try not to lose
your head and buy a half-price TV when you’ve already got a
perfectly good one at home!

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the Monday following Black Friday. In 2018 Cyber Monday falls on 26th November.

While Black Friday is mainly a day for shopping on the high street, Cyber Monday is all about online deals. Combined with Black Friday and the weekend in between, Cyber Monday completes four days of major deals and discounts marking the run up to Christmas.
