I have a 2 camera system, SRNVR-460H. The power supply from each camera runs to its own household plug socket. Would this splitter enable me to connect the two cameras to one power supply?

Asked by: Ronald
Yes it would but the answer is not quite so simple as that. You need to be careful about powering 2 cameras from a single supply. The power supply provided will have a maximum rated current which is the maximum current that it can supply, lets say 500 milliamps as an example. Each camera will draw an amount of current lets say in this example 300 milliamps. This means the power supply can provide enough current to safely power the camera with a little extra as a redundancy. If you then connect 2 cameras to a single power supply you will be drawing twice the current (600 milliamps) which is more than the power pack is designed for, this will cause it to overload and either cut out (thermal protect) or possibly fail completely. Unless you know the exact current the cameras draw (when on full load) you cannot calculate if a single supply will work correctly. You could replace the 2 single 500 milliamps supplies with a 1000 milliamp unit, this would then be suitable as it has the same current as the 2 separate units combined and would be able to cope with the double load.

Would the standard power adapter supplied with a Swann cctv kit offer enough power to operate 8 cameras using one of these?

Asked by: Kaza
No, I am sorry but the item will not work for this use. The cams will use about 1A each so you would need at least an 8A power adapter.

What power supply would I need for this splitter.

Asked by: Gordon
Typically this cable would be used with a 12 volt CCTV system to power cameras. A suitable power supply would be http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/power-pax-120w-switched-mode-dc-fixed-voltage-12v-power-supply-n96ju

Unfortunately we are unable to guarantee full compatibility for this item in your intended application, as this is not the manner for which it was designed to be used.

Does this allow 8 splits from an existing power supply that comes with Swann kits?
Asked by: ME
It does, but you need to check the amperage of the power pack you are splitting and the total amperage load of the devices you wish to use. Make sure that the total load does not exceed the capabilities of the transformer.
