What makes this iron unique?
This soldering iron is part of an LCD solder station. The iron is temperature controlled and can be set through the station’s control buttons. The temperature is shown on the blue digital LCD display. This control will allow you to use the soldering iron in a range of different situations, from assembling or repairing PCB's to soldering electrical cables together. The station also includes a stand for the soldering iron to allow it to warm up without having to be held constantly. The included sponge on the stand allows you to keep the tip clean and free, enhancing the performance of your soldering iron.

What difference does the wattage make?
The wattage of a soldering iron is one of the most important factors when deciding which one to buy. Higher wattage will deliver more power to the iron’s tip, allowing it to heat up quicker. As this is a 60W mains soldering iron, it heats up the tip in under 30 seconds to a selected temperature, allowing you to start soldering without having to refill butane tanks or replace batteries.

Do I need anything else for this soldering iron?
This soldering iron is fully assembled. To get started, all you need to do is get some solder. Simply unpack this soldering iron and connect it to a mains socket. In under a minute, it should have warmed up to temperature and be ready for use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comparable with much more expensive units. Very lightweight, soft flexy cable, heavy stand and fast heat-up. (But not as fast as the LCD says, that is the internal temperature, the iron is a tad cooler & slower!) The wobbly fit in the stand is easy to fix, just remove the finger guard, it isn't needed. Overall, an excellent unit at a great price. If you happen to catch it when a deal is on, go for it. Get a pack of bits too, the supplied one is a bit tiddly for most work. Even a replacement iron is a fantastic price, I got one for a faster tip change, just change the iron, no waiting for it to cool to change tip sizes. :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from As others have said "Purchased whilst on offer had concerns reading other reviews 1st stand is not plastic any more also the finger guard (plastic screw cover) still stops iron sitting properly - just pulled it back 5mm iron sits solid .... "... Well I found it was the same on my iron the finger guard stops the iron sitting in the holder properly as its too long. My tip here is to trim 2-3 mm off the finger guard length with a sharp knife, perfect job now my iron sits neatly and I don't have to pull back the guard every time :) Product is great for the money I am now pleased with the purchase and would recommend

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I got this purely to save the money on repairing the DC jack on my laptop... when I found you could get a 60w soldering staion for at a reduced price on promo i went for it. almost instant heat (compared to ordinary mains irons) easy to read and operate. really like the flexiblelead to the iron.. those hard plastic leads just 'lead' to frustration. joke intended. I know it's not going to be the same as the ??200 high end type rigs.. but to me worth every penny. Ps. I was offered the spare tips pack at purchase point.. Glad I did as the fine point supplied didn't deliver the heat area as the spade tip in the (3x tip) pack did; it then got the larger component of the board quickly.. then swapped back to the fine point tip for the delicate stuff :) Very happy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Good Value - Change default temps for non lead solder though This is a really good value soldering iron. When my lovely lead based solder ran out I bought some non-lead solder, and it seemed as if all my soldering skills had disappeared overnight. After a fair bit of googlage it turned out that I might need to solder at a higher temp. But, having "filed" the original instructions, I couldn't figure out how to adjust the temp - Which it turns out you do by pressing and holding either the first or second button. You can reassign the "memory" of each of the three buttons by pressing the hash button then the button you want to store the temp in. If you've misplaced the manual you can get one for the machine that this is a clone of by googling AT938D manual

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is a fantastic iron for the price - it is very sturdy and well built, with a convenient user interface and a small, lightweight iron with a thin and very flexible wire that doesn't get in the way. My only quarrel with it is the small thermal mass of the iron - the heater element is very thin and does not hold much heat, and there is not much connection between the tip and the heater and the tip sits very loose. This isn't a problem in practice, I have just used bigger ones before now so it was a bit of a learning curve to find the correct style to use this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have only used this once today and I think it is absolutely brilliant. Easy to use, excellent set of instructions and almost instant heat up. The has been no problem with the connection between the unit and iron itself after 4hrs use it was still firmly in place. The lead itself is very flexible and doesn't get in the way at all. Overall I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to anyone starting out in the soldering hobby and also anyone who is a little more advanced who wants to upgrade. Brilliant product!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overall I think this is good value for money. The heat up is fast, stability good, having 3 preset temperatures is a good feature. Cons 1 The iron falls out of the base if the cable is not supported by the work surface. I fitted a coil spring support from an old stand into mine. In my opinion the manufacturer has left this part out to save cost as my retrofit item fitted perfectly. I also added some more weight into the base. It is now fit for purpose. 2 The crew holding the tip on keeps coming loose. The thread is too coarse and / or poorly cut 3 It needs a chisel tip as standard not the conical tip it comes with. Overall still worth it, but be prepared to modify it to make it fit for purpose

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am just starting out in electronics and my first iron, which was an N78AR model from Maplins only gave mediocre results and I just thought that it was my lack of skill that was the reason for this. I have just bought the A55KJ soldering station and the results that I am producing straight away are so much better. If you are new to soldering then I can't recommend this unit enough, it is a bit more money but well worth the expenditure as my enthusiasm for this hobby has been re-ignited.

The manual recommends that the station is recalibrated when the tip is changed. There are some vague (and not very useful ) instructions in the manual about how to do this. How exactly do you go about recalibrating the temperature when you change the tip?

Asked by: jeffh
Re calibrating would be required to be done via a 3rd party i'm afraid .
