The Transforming Robot Kit
The main focus of the transforming robot kit is using motors and servos to perform complex compound movement actions.
The transforming robot kit contains a DC motors for propulsion and six powerful servo motors. It also contains all the necessary parts to build creations around them, including the Studuino, battery box, cables and over 100 building blocks- including two special output blocks – a blue LED and a buzzer.
Full instructions and code are available to the robots, although hundreds more are possible depending on how you put them together and write or modify code. 3 different ready-made programs are also available to guide you through differing levels of complexity of programming.
The finished transforming robot walks as a biped and can fold over backwards into a car shape and propel itself using the DC motor mounted on the models back.
The suggested build is just a starting point to familiarise yourself with the components, the fun really starts when you get creative with your own builds.

The Studuino Robotics Platform
The Artec Robotist kits do all their magic with the Studuino board – an Arduino based board which is the brain of all the creations. This powerful microcontroller is easily programmed from the simple to use programming interface and for expert users can even export the code as Arduino code for those who want to dig deeper into your code. Connect up to eight servo motors, two DC motors and eight sensors. The board is fitted into a durable enclosure that also has four push buttons that can be utilised within your creations, it also has the same block/peg structure as the blocks allowing it to be used as an integral piece of the robot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing flexibility I've had no probem getting this up and running with Debian and Ubuntu Linux machines. Fantastic flexibility both on the programming side, which is based on Scratch, and the blocks themselves, so once you've built the transforming robot there's no barrier to coming up with your own models. Easy to add extra sensors too, like the ultrasound unit which is readily available for a few pounds. It would've been nice if they included printed instructions, but seeing as you need a computer to program the robot anyway, this is not such a big deal. Overall I think it's amazing value for money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not good i got this as a christmas present and so far it has managed to naff me off no end, downloaded the drivers ok but when i plug the board in nothing happens the screen is blank so cant programm it also said it came with a disc which it didnt

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Promises much. If it works. I took a risk with this for my 12-yr-old son. Not a 'mainstream' toy, so knowledgeable support is hard to come by ('when', rather than 'if' you need it) and the stuff that is available by way of users and 'the community' is inclined to be a bit inaccessible and anoraky. Anyway, I gave it a go. So, here we are. Christmas Day and it's been an unmitigated disaster so far. After downloading the several manuals, software and drivers, managed to build the 'bot (the easy bit), but software has been a fiasco. No comms between the robot and the computer (Maplin assured me it will work with my Mac), just a message to say no communication. Tried absolutely everything except replacing USB cable, for which we currently have no replacement. Re-installed software multiple times; re-started mac multiple times; reset Studuino multiple times. Nothing. Like I said, you buy this at your risk. It might work fine, in which case, with a fair bit of basic knowledge and patience (which is no bad thing to practice developing - the main reason I wanted to buy it for my boy), it will doubtless be a whole lot of fun, with plenty of learning going on while they play. But if you want a guaranteed stress-free Christmas with a gift for your child that will just work, then don't risk it.
