how far from a person speaking at regular volume would this pick up, we need to set up a temp conference room ( committe around a table ) and wish the public to hear the discussion. the room is approx 12mt x 8mt and the table is 8mt x 4mt.

This would be impossible to answer as it would vary based on the person's voice, background noise, the acoustics of the room and so on. based on your room measurements and presuming a committee of approx 10 people you would likely want 3 - 5 of these.
