Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best (and only) UK HomeKit power plug Apple HomeKit might have struggled to start with. But now that there's a good range of HomeKit compatibile products, its mega-easy to set up home automation, so long as you have an iPhone and if you want remote control when your away from home, an Apple TV. But one thing the rest of the world has had for a while is HomeKit power sockets. Finally, Eve has come up with the goods, and the Eve Energy works exactly as you expect it to. Use it with other HomeKit sensors, like Eve Motion, or Eve Room, and you can create endless scenarios. Turn the a humidifier on if it gets too dry, turn a fan on when it gets to hot. I'm gonna get an Eve Motion and use it to freak out the kids by lighting the Christmas tree when they come in the room. My only slight issue is the price. I've bought a couple now, but if they were half the price I'd have them on every socket in the house.

Do you have to be in the home to control these plugs, or can you also manipulate them out of the home? Do they work with Amazon Echo and IFTTT? How do they connect to the internet if so - do they need a gateway?

Asked by: Aftermath
HomeKit products work directly with your iOS device or Apple TV. Triggers and timers need one of these devices to be in range. Obviously and Apple TV works best as it's always there, but you could use an iPad in the same way.   So yes, to use timers, triggers and so on, you do need to use something as a hub. But you don't need a hub if you are present. The Apple TV is the best hub option because you get so many other features too.  Because the Apple TV is connected to the internet, you'll also gain remote access and control of your devices and sensors. So you can check if you left the back door open, or turn on the heating before you get home.  It doesn't work with Amazon Echo or any other smart home platforms but it does work with all Apple HomeKit enabled devices (all HomeKit devices with work with all other HomeKit devices). The reason you can't connect to other platforms is for security. Nothing's unhackable, but Apple HomeKit is the most secure smart home platform out there.
