What can the robot do?
Make a brilliant robot with this kit and watch as it finds its way around obstacles. The robot has infrared diodes and a receiving module, which help it detect obstacles with its on board microprocessor. The model moves on six legs and comes with two different types of legs - find out what happens to the robot’s movement when you change its legs.

What’s included in this kit?
This kit comes with a variety of electronic components, from LEDs, resistors and capacitors to integrated circuits (microchips), oscillators, receiving modules and many others. It provides a great way to practice soldering a wide range of different components and see how they function together. The mechanical assembly gives you a great introduction to mechanics and how gears and axles work.

How easy is this kit to solder?
This kit comes with a range of components to solder, from basic to more complicated pieces. The kit provides a great way to progress your soldering ability. You can make a whole model complete with enclosure from the included components, but you may want to add your own accessories. This kit requires four AA batteries (not included), a soldering iron, solder, long nose pliers (not included), diagonal cutters(not included) and a screwdriver (not included)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Funny little device - works nicely Bought this for my ten year old to build but he wasn't too interested as he preferred the other kits I also got him. I made it myself. The only tricky part was getting the IR emitters to sit nicely in the holders when they were being soldered. Other than that it was a simple build, just make sure you get the wires for the motors in the right place and the right way round. A little trial and error and we were golden. The device works well and certainly picks up objects before collisions. The shinier to IR the further away the response, so cushions tend to get a near miss.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I have built one before and was pleased but I recently bought 2 to build with nephews and there appears to be a show stopping batch problem. After building 2 of them both will not start up. There must be a problem with the micro controller. I have tested all other parts and they are ok the only thing I cannot test is the microcontroller.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from could not get this working Gear box was easy to assemble. PCB was populated, but could not get this to work. On the IC got 0.7 volts between pins 4 and 5, where should have had about 4. Checked polarities of all diodes and corrrect fitting of all transistors. Simply does nothing when powered up. The IC had two red dots painted onto it. Maybe they have to test and sort them or something.

I was given it as a Christmas present & it has given me lots of enjoyment putting together. I felt I had to write as there are a couple of reviews where the reviewers didn't get theirs working - my kit worked first time (and my soldering experience is limited). I can see though that had something gone wrong, it would have been hard to track down, and perhaps the instructions would have benefitted from some way of testing part way through. Overall thoroughly recommended.

Worked first time and did exactly what it was supposed to do. Top marks from me for this great little kit!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Drive mechanism doesn't work We got this around last Christmas and only just got round to finishing it. The drive mechanism doesn't work and keeps on disengaging .too much play. Motor moves too much. Will need additional work on our part. Wouldn't buy again

I dont seem to have the gearbox instruction manual is there a place to download it. I can only find the download for the user manual

My son received one of these for Christmas and I'm currently building it. I will be seriously annoyed and my son will be very disappointed and therefore put off electronics if after spending several hours building this it fails to work. Maplins can you confirm that these do actually work? The two reviews suggest otherwise.
