It fitted into the ExpressCard 54/34 slot on my ACER Aspire 7730 laptop. The instructions that are enclosed with it are simple and good.
They advised to check that Windows Vista Service Packs 1 and 2 were installed so that Windows Vista could install the correct driver for the FireWire port ExpressCard. I am not too good with computers, but managed to do this on my Acer Aspire 7730 laptop bought in 2008 (so some 8 or 9 years old!!) via the Windows free software download website.
It then advised to check in Device Manager that the "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers" / "Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller" was displayed in order to verify installation.
It was then a case of inserting the card being careful because the first half of the slot is wider (54mm) than the ExpressCard itself (34mm).
And hey presto! I used a FireWire 400 lead (6 pin male to 4 pin male) to connect my Panasonic NV DS-55B video camera (some 17 years old!!) to the FireWire port on the ExpressCard.
