Rated 4 out of 5 by from Had problems installing the software from the supplied disk. Obtained the download from the Maplin site which worked. I also downloaded the manual due the lack of instructions. I then tested the operation of the device. The first trick was to get the LED brightness right so there was enough light to see by and not so much as to to white-out the image. The next problem is judging what you see. There isn't a way to judge distance so what might appear to be a rough surface might only be slightly textured. It is necessary to try and keep the end of the scope as steady as possible as the autofocus struggles if there is movement.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I was able to connect plug and play with my netbook running linux, no drivers or software needed. Appeared as a camera and I could use any imaging software. Was very useful to find source of a leaking pipe under the floor. However it is only a 300k image size which is a lot less than mobile phone cameras and the led illumination is flawed by reflecting back from the glass end cap, difficult to get any decent illumination without flaring. I found it was easier to use a torch but that may not always be possible. Basic and handy especially when discounted.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Driver: FYI, as far as I can see, the driver on the CD is the same version as in the Maplin download. If you have a slot-loading CD drive, then obviously use the Maplin download. Snapshot: the Maplin downloaded manual says when you press the snapshot button, a program "Snapshot Reader" opens - it didn't on mine until I manually opened the snapshot reader program, and then when I pressed the snapshot button, the reader opened (provided Preview was on, otherwise AMcap opened in multiple windows). Just going to re-boot to see what happens after that, but will lose this post unless I post it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Got given one of these for Christmas. Very good product for the money, but donФЗЦt expect everything. IФЗЦm not sure where it came from, but there was no installation manual (download from Maplin). Note the manual makes a cryptic reference to focus adjustment , but the lens is fixed focus which is fine. To preview the image you need to specify that in the program window otherwise you will see nothing. As with all videos if you wave the camera about you get a blur, and because the lens is a few feet from the handle it accentuates any movements, so care is needed to get a useful image otherwise even the video stills will be blurred. The focal length is from 6cm to infinity but donФЗЦt expect to see something metres away inside a dark wall since the led light on the lens is naturally limited in brightness. Saving images is relatively easy, whether still (bmp) or video (avi) but a bit cryptic. Just to be clear, you do need to be attached to a PC to use it, so in practice a laptop is necessary. It comes with a clip-on magnet which rather to my surprise lifted a 5m steel measure. Field of view is maybe 30 degrees ФЗф at 25cm a hand will fill the frame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got one of these to locate a cable that had got snagged on a building tie in a cavity wall. Totally fantastic. Used it with an XP notebook and it looked very professional. Runs off PC's USB, has variable control mounted on hand grip for LED intensity, and if needed a small button to take video stills.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought this on while on offer to throw in my tool box but wanted to use my netbook which runs an AMD quad with windows 8.1. I couldn't find a download so copied the driver disc to a stick on the desktop, installed it into documents on the netbook, double clicked, it installed no problem, plugged the camera in and hey presto it runs and captures perfectly, (You have to tell the computer it's a telescope from the software) A steady hand is required but the light when adjusted makes it easily capable of reading small print. I am extremely impressed, easy to set up and works great! A bargain even at full price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This product does indeed 'Plug&Play' with Windows XP. After running the setup program and installing the drivers you simply attach the camera and it is detected fine. Works every time afterwards. As an added bonus, it even installs and works perfectly with Windows 7 x64. Image quality is a little worse than I was expecting but that doesn't really detract from just how useful it is for looking inside small dark spaces. The length of the USB cable and the flexible head is more than adequate for my uses. I'm sure it will come in useful the more I get to use it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The driver software is supplied on a mini-CD so you can't use it in any machine with a slot-loading CD/DVD drive and i cannot find a manufacturer's web site with drivers. The installation routine is awful and took 3 attempts to complete. However, I've just got this working on my Apple MacBook using VirtualBox and Windows XP home Sp3. Image quality isn't great but I can reach places others cant.

I have one of these Snake Scope cameras (bought several years ago and worked on windows 7), when trying to use it on Windows 10 the driver installs and device manager identifies it correctly but no video app opens up. Is there a video app I could use?

Asked by: OscarBravo
We checked and there have been no release of updated drivers for windows 10. I've requested more info from the manufacturer to see if they will be providing this data and will update this web page if they do. In the meantime I would run the program in compatibility mode.
