What can I do with this kit?
Discover metal treasures you’ve lost in the garden or at the beach, or even try and locate metal wires and pipes behind the walls of your house with this versatile metal detector. Customise the sensitivity and volume of your detector to help you identify the location of any metal, and also discover what type of metal it is you’ve found. Have fun and get discovering with this snazzy metal detector kit, and use the box it comes in for a handy enclosure.

What can I learn from this kit?
Metal detectors use a coil of wire to detect metals that can’t be seen. A magnetic field is created by passing electricity through the wire coil, and this allows you to detect the presence of metal in the ground you are covering. Identification of the metal is possible as different metals have different properties. Ferrous metals, for example, include some form of iron and are usually magnetic and show up easily to a metal detector. Metals like gold, however, would appear quite different to an advanced metal detector’s search.

Beyond the classification and detection of metal, you can also learn about soldering and how different components are connected to create a circuit. This kit requires a soldering iron and solder and may require wire cutters and all-purpose adhesive tape.

Where can I go from here?
Once you’ve built your metal detector, you can see if you can tell the difference between different types of metals, or create a shaft and disc to scan the ground at a distance with common household items (extra wire may be required). This kit requires a 9V (PP3) battery (not included Order Code L43AL). What will you find with your metal detector?
