What makes this Sat Nav unique?
The Garmin DriveSmart 50LMT-D is fitted with free Garmin digital traffic software, which makes driving much easier from the moment it leaves the box. The software uses DAB technology to download the latest traffic news, and update your route accordingly to keep your travel time to a minimum. Driver alerts are built-in to encourage safer driving – warning you of what might be ahead, such as sharp curves, railways crossings, speed cameras and more.

The Garmin DriveSmart 50LMT-D is fitted with a bright five-inch screen which can be mounted on your windscreen horizontally or vertically, allowing you to fit the Sat Nav in the perfect position for use.

The Sat Nav can be linked to your smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing you to receive calls, view text messages and even calendar reminders without taking your hands off the steering wheel. The Garmin DriveSmart 50LMT-D will do this while guiding you on your journey using recognisable landmarks and directions such as "turn right at the red building." The ‘direct access’ feature allows you to select a complex destination such as a specific retail store at a shopping centre, so that you can complete your journey without complications.

If you would like assistance when reversing or would like to keep an eye on the kids when driving, Garmin have designed the BC30 Wireless Backup Camera and the babyCam (both sold separately, direct from Garmin) – both of which can be linked directly to your Garmin DriveSmart 50LMT-D Sat Nav.

Which countries can I use this Sat Nav in?
This Sat Nav has maps of the UK, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland pre-installed. The Sat Nav can be upgraded by installing additional maps onto a microSD memory card and inserting this into the Sat Nav. Standard microSD cards to be used as map upgrades can be purchased from the Garmin website. Garmin also sell the maps pre-installed onto microSD cards, which can be installed directly.

Can I update this Sat Nav?
This Sat Nav comes with free lifetime map updates. To make use of this, simply download the Garmin Express software, connect your Sat Nav to your computer with the supplied USB cable and the software will do the hard work for you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garmin Drive Assist 50 LMT-D 5" Sat Nav Very expensive unit - screen cracked - defective glass - unit not dropped or mistreated. No longer works and cracked screens according to Garmin Customer Support are not covered by the warranty.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lots of good features. Very happy with the purchase, but would have appreciated home delivery as it is a 50 mile round trip to collect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very effective unit I've been using this satnav for a couple of weeks now, and tested it under a variety of conditions. Mostly it's a very impressive unit, with a few not-so-good points thrown in. The good points are as follows: It's easy to operate with a quick 'touch response' time. In this it is an improvement on some of the TomTom models with which I have had some limited experience. The screen view is excellent with plenty of advance notification of upcoming turns, roundabouts, speed cameras, traffic delays etc. The voiceover directions are great. Not too fussy, but just about right. The amount of streets shown can be determined by the user. That way your 'road view' is no more cluttered than is sensibly required. If you take a wrong turn (away from its predetermined route) it re-assesses the situation immediately and is very efficient in planning an alternate route. This avoids the tedious business of having to do a U-turn on some inconveniently busy main road. Although the option of U-turns can be selected if the user does find this more to his/her liking. The less attractive features are not seriously problematic. But they are as follows. First; be aware that the so-called 5" screen size is rather flatteringly based on the corner-to-corner diagonal measurement; more realistically speaking the actual 'picture' size is slightly less than 4.5" horizontally, by 2.5" vertically (111mm x 63mm). The maps were not up-to-date on purchase. So a pretty quick online update is generally a good idea. When I tried this, for some unaccountable reason my PC did not 'recognize' the attached Garmin device for some while. This was a bit annoying, although eventually it did sort itself out in this regard. Also - less tedious, but still poor service - the internal battery was completely flat when I first switched it on. Presumably both of these shortcomings are due to the fact that these things may be sitting around in the shop, or wherever, for possibly months before being sold. A slightly endearing peculiarity is that the 'voice' is unable to pronounce many street names correctly. This isn't really any problem. More mildly amusing really. Less entertaining is its occasional inclination (as with other satnavs) to lead the driver along a stupidly narrow and virtually undrivable country lane now and then. Also; for some reason; it did once instruct me to 'turn right' onto a road which was clearly marked as 'NO RIGHT TURN'. Whilst road-testing this unit, on roads with which I am very familiar, I do notice that its choice of route is not always the most logical or direct. So, as usual, a bit of common sense is required in use generally. To sum up. A very useful and efficient satnav, with a few minor shortcomings. I consider it to be a worthwhile purchase. Incidentally, if anyone from Garmin reads this; may I suggest that the inclusion of a protective carry case would be a nice addition, and not too much to ask for, within the purchase price.
