Your simple home WiFi
Get seamless WiFi coverage throughout your home with Google’s Whole Home Wifi system. Designed to keep up with your increasing Wifi demands, you simply replace your router with a Google Wifi point and it will work with your modem and internet provider to give you fast, seamless signal for your whole home. The Google Whole Home Wifi System offers fantastic scalability for your home network by allowing additional Google Wifi points to be added for larger homes.

Stay in control with the App
Google Wifi is set up and controlled through the Google Wifi mobile app (available on iOs and android), which can be accessed wherever you are in the world. See what devices are connected to your WiFi network and manage existing connections in an instant. You can even set up parental controls; if it’s family time, dinnertime or lights out you can control when they access the internet. Share your WiFi network with friends and family using guest access or even prioritise devices to benefit from greater speeds.

Benefit from the best speeds
Network assist technology will be working in the background to deliver you the fastest internet speeds. It selects the best WiFi pathway so you will be benefitting from the fastest possible speeds whilst connected to your devices. If you have more than one Google Wifi point, Google Wifi will connect you to the closest point meaning you enjoy consistent speeds throughout your home

Easy to set up
Simple to set up, you sign into the Google Wifi app through your Google account and the app will guide you through installation. Choose any Wifi point, plug it in and connect it to your modem then wait for the light to go blue on your Google Wifi point. The app will then guide you step by step through installation once you have scanned the QR code on the base of your point. Setting up additional Wifi points is just as easy as the initial set up, for ultimate optimisation place each point about two rooms apart.

If you need additonal units to further cut out the dead zones in your home, you can opt for another Single Pack or Double Pack

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple, reliable but doesn't play well with BT Parental Controls I've had this item since launch day and have mixed feelings about it. It is very reliable and is always available. Devices seem to stay connected throughout my whole home with 2 points. I found that I could not set up the second access point without first switching off and then removing the BT Parental Controls. Any attempt to remove the parental controls stopped the second device from working properly. The primary access point however worked fine with parental control enabled. Something to be aware of and might save lots of time trying to figure out what the problem is. Before I tried Google Wifi I also had the BT Whole Home system. Dare I say it - I preferred the BT Whole Home Wifi. It seemed to be faster, simpler to set up and worked well with my existing router so that I could still use functions such as the router built in VPN and time limit controls for the kids. The Google Wifi device has no VPN or parental controls, other than time scheduling certain devices. In essence, Google Wifi is a router and as such if you connect it to your existing router you might end up with issues with double nat. This can replace your existing router providing you still have a modem (for BT type lines) If you want simplicity then go for the Google Wifi. If you want to retain control of your settings and router functionality I would go with the BT Whole Home Wifi.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great WiFi Mesh System I bought five of these Google WiFi units and I must admit I am so pleased I did. They are so easy to set up,giving great WiFi coverage all round my house. You can even add an ethernet lead to one of the two access points beneath the unit for wired connection. There is an excellent app. which you can download from Apple or Android which guides you through the easy process of setting up.The units firmware are automatically updated by Google, so once you have placed them in different locations around your home, you can sit back and Google will do the rest. There is a very covenient led light on each unit which you can adjust to whatever level of brightness you want--a great indicator of your connection to the internet ( colour white when connected and a reddish colour if not connected),you can set it to off, but I find this useful for checking if your router is active or not. The great thing about this "Mesh" system is that wherever you are in your house , the nearest unit to you will give you the best possible signal, so gone are those dead spots in your home. In conclusion I must add that the "Google WiFi Mesh" system has certainly surpassed my expectations, and I would not hesitate to recommend this superb system to others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No more blank spots! I've had Google Wifi for several months (starting with a twin pack) and I love it. The initial set up was simple and the system has been hassle-free since the day of installation, despite numerous TVs, tablets, computers and phones using it throughout the house. However one bedroom was a bit of a blank spot for wifi - to pick up a signal there it was necessary to be in one corner of the room. As a result I decided to add an additional unit to extend the mesh so it covers the whole house. The single pack consists of a simple cubic box, containing the wifi unit itself, a power supply (USB-C), an ethernet cable (flat style), an instruction card and a warranty card. Having installed the twin pack already I had a fairly clear idea what to do; I took the unit to the top floor of the house beside the bedroom, plugged it in, fired up the Google Wifi app on my phone and went to Settings/Network and General/Wifi points/Network device settings/Add Wifi Point (button is at the bottom of the screen). Then follow the instructions. It's unclear to me whether the Bluetooth connection the app tried to set up was successful, but I soon found myself pointing my phone camera at the QR code on the base of the Wifi point and then the new unit was added to the network. Unfortunately that didn't work out as well as I'd hoped; I got a message telling me that the signal to the new unit was Poor and that ideally it would be placed closer to the primary unit (which is the one linked to our ISP's router). The primary unit is on the ground floor and the second one was on the first floor; I think the problem here was that installing the third unit on the second floor (as I was doing) meant that traffic to the new unit had to be routed to the internet via the second unit before it got to the primary one. Slightly disheartening, although then I had the idea of placing the new unit on the ground floor (closer to the primary), but directly beneath the bedroom in question. I'm happy to report that it is now connected with a 'Great' signal and that the bedroom in question has full internet capability. Despite the unexpected hiccup I recommend Google Wifi to anyone who suffers from blank spots and just wants a hassle-free experience setting up and running a much-improved network.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Third Unit Handy In Bigger House When the product launched, I bought the twin pack as powerline adaptors were proving to be useless and I live in a house with three levels. The twin pack sorted out the majority of my wifi issues but one of the units does need to be located next to the router (which is on the top floor). Signal strength was always 100% on the top and middle floor - where the two units were located - but on the lower floor would sometimes be poor. We stream video and music quite a lot so a third unit seemed like a sensible addition. In-the-box In the box, you have the unit itself, setup instructions, a USB C charger with wall plug and an ethernet cable. As this is an additional unit, you can put the ethernet cable to the side. The unit has two ethernet sockets - one for your router (if this was the first unit, so you don't need this) and one to connect a device by cable if you wish. I wish it had more than one spare ethernet socket as I do like to connect my PS4 and 4K television via ethernet - I had to buy a separate mini-switch for that. Setup It isn't particularly clear what to do to add the additional unit other than open up the app on your phone (available for Android and iPhone). To do this, you need to open the app then either click on the menu button then click 'Set up Wifi point' or open the app, go to the internal (world globe) symbol, click on your existing Wifi points, then Settings, then Add Wifi Point. Could you instead simply scan the QR code on the base of the new unit to automatically kick-off the process? Either way, the instructions could be clearer. Once you get to the the Setup or Add Wifi point, then it couldn't be easier. The app will guide you through the following steps: - Place your wifi point first - it suggests no more than two rooms away. I placed it in the room below a room with another unit. - Plug in your unit - it will automatically switch on and start flashing blue. - Name your Wifi point - the app will suggest to do this based on location in your home which is handy, but you can add custom label. - It will then, using your existing network and Bluetooth, try and detect the new unit. It took about two minutes but did it without error. - Once detected, it will ask you to scan the QR code under the unit and start adding the new unit to your mesh network. This takes another couple of minutes. - Once successfully added, your network will automatically add the new unit to your existing network. It will then test, do a software update and restart all units. Once setup Once setup, the new unit works perfectly. It has improved my Wifi performance in the room it is placed with increased loading speeds on Netflix and 100% Wifi signal on mobile devices. I get 60MB speed across the network which is simply impossible from my default router - I was getting 20MB before on a good day! Summary If you already have two units, you probably don't need a third unless your house is particularly big. This is testament to the great performance of having two units. In a bigger house, it will really benefit you have three units. I would prefer the unit to have more ethernet ports but that is a personal preference as the Wifi performance is more than adequate for streaming 4K or gaming. How to start the setup of additional unit could be a little clearer but once you find in the app is very straight forward.

Does this collect all information and report back to Google servers. You have to accept Google can collect information before you can use an Android phone, so is this the same. Looks good otherwise.

You would need to check the Google terms of service for the item directly with Google.

Can this device be used as an access point to connect to a MiFi type device (I mean a MiFI device which uses 3G/4G to connect to the internet instead of an ADSL router)

Unfortunately this would not be suitable for your requirements.

Is this compatible with Virgin Media fibre broadband?

Asked by: Itaylor49
This should work with any internet modem as this is only a replacement for the router. If you have a combined router and modem then you may need to put your existing router into modem only mode for this to connect properly.
