Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does more or less what it says on the tin, but there's scope for improvement Just installed this in my holiday flat so that I can monitor the temperature when I'm not there and turn the heating on remotely so as to heat the flat before I arrive. It was a doddle to install. I have a conventional S-Plan system with two zone valves - one for the radiators and one for the hot water cylinder. The Hive replaced a 2-channel manual (electronic) programmer and a wireless room stat. The Hive's receiver plugged straight onto the old programmer's wall-plate, so there was virtually no wiring to do except for linking out the room stat. [You clearly need to understand your heating system well enough to be able to work out which wire is which - particularly if wiring changes are needed. In my case, all the right wires were already in the right places on the existing wall-plate.] Connecting the hub to the internet router and installing the thermostat were equally easy. The system was up and working with local control in a matter of minutes, leaving only remote control to sort out. A quick phone call to Hive, quoting the code on the scratch card supplied with the system, got me set up with an on-line account. There was a slight hiccup because the email which they promised to send me, telling me how to create a password and log on, failed to arrive. After a second phone call, it arrived straight away. There are 3 ways of controlling the system - using the buttons and knob on the thermostat, using a smartphone app, or using an internet browser to log on the Hive site. They all achieve more or less the same things except, of course, the thermostat provides only local and not remote control. In my opinion, using a browser on a PC is by far the easiest, but the other methods are useable. Setting the heating schedule is not as intuitive as I would like to see. At first sight, you appear only to be able to define 3 on/off periods per day - with the heating dropping to the frost setting between periods. Even if you want your 3 periods to join up with each other, it gives you a 15 minute off (frost) slot between the heating periods. However, you can in fact expand those 15 minute slots and change their temperature - allowing you to set 6 end-to end periods per day, all with different temperatures if you wish. But this is not immediately obvious. You can have a different programme for each day of the week if you like. If you want the same programme for more than one day, you can copy it from day to day - but it's not immediately obvious how to do this. The default frost setting temperature can ONLY be set by using the thermostat - not via the app or browser. The minimum frost temperature you can set is 7 degrees - which I think is a bit high. However, if you use Holiday Mode, or Manual, you can go down to 5 degrees - so there is a work-around. One rather disappointing feature is that, unlike a number of competitive digital thermostats, Hive doesn't use PID (proportional, integral, derivative) logic to control the heating. The result of this is that there is quite a lot of temperature overshoot (typically up to 1.5 degrees) followed by a long off period. This could be avoided, and overall efficiency and comfort improved, if PID control were used to cycle the heating on and off as the target is approached rather than running full-on until it is reached. Hopefully Hive will add this via a firmware update at some future point. Meanwhile, it only get 4 stars! P.S. Accessories - such as coloured thermostat surrounds and thermostat stands - are very over-priced! I wanted to stand my thermostat on an item of furniture - and move it around - rather than mounting it on a wall, so I made a simple stand using spare materials in my workshop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Easy Self Installation Well packaged, Good documentation. I have an oil boiler which had a Danfoss TP9 controller, and I just replaced the Danfoss with the Hive. The installation was easy although you do need to know how your CH and HW valves are wired (driven by Hive pins 4 and 3 resp). I have two thick walls between the thermostat and the boiler receiver, but all the lights went green within a few minutes and it was easy to put a schedule into the thermostat. I can now control the system from android and ios via internet -- it seems to work fine.I prefer this system to one which "learns" from my comings and goings and temperature history -- these things can have unintended consequences. Interestingly, almost all the negative comments on other review sites resulted from the long wait times for installation by British Gas engineers and from some of their shortcomings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install and does what it says I bought and installed this a few weeks ago. Installation was simple as I was replacing an existing timer/thermostat on an old oil boiler. Only point to work out was to change the mode for gravity-fed hot water. Other than that, swap back plates as slight difference in size, but wiring layout the same, and remove old thermostat. All working beautifully.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality bit of kit Very straightforward to install, worked fine first time. iPhone app being used very happily by my wife, who takes great pleasure in turning the heating on from the bus on her way home from work! Would be nice if additional thermostat wall brackets were supplied/available, and if the thermostat stand wasn't quite so expensive, but it is a quality product and we're very pleased with it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 21st Century Technology! The receiver connects to the power, and in turn to the boiler. The rest is wireless, what could be simpler? Since buying this, I've reset the entire system 5 times (only owned it 3 days) have been onto British Gas 5 times, have replaced the Thermostat once, and sat (in winter) in my living room wearing a thick jumper. Absolute Junk! Thankfully, Maplin support was far better than British Gas who basically sat reading from a script whilst we froze off our proverbials, denying that there was anything wrong with their faulty Thermostat.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No wireless radiator controllers available Not a full heating control system. If you want to wirelessly manage individual room temps this product has no facility to do this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Piece of cake Bought self fit for £119 at Maplin. Old house had no thermostat and an old timer that gave us a single option for all 7 days. Now have a thermostat and full control over times and temps, including switching on remotely to ensure we never come home to a cold house. Self fit was very easy but our old timer did have a matching backplate so it was as easy as unscrewing old timer and slotting new one in, took all of 5 minutes. All in all very happy, has updated old heating system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love how simple and elegant this is My husband is a boiler engineer, he begged for us to get smart controls... we shopped around for a while and eventually decided on Hive. I honestly could not be without this now. Reliable, very pretty and so incredibly useful when I'm running about or on the way home early with the kids. - Highly recommend.

Which make of gas boilers does this product work with

If you are buying Hive with no installation and have a hot water tank (conventional boiler) then Hive Active Heating and Hot Water is right for you. If you do not have a hot water tank (combi boiler) take a look at Hive Active Heating. Hive Active Heating must be installed by a qualified professional – installation is not included in this kit.
