Rated 1 out of 5 by from Save your money I purchased this unit at Staples yesterday. When I put a cassette in the machine I found the playback speed was faster than normal. I tried several cassettes and found them all the same. Also, In proximity with the computer it distorts the sound with noise. I tried the same cassettes in my regular tape deck and they played fine.I returned the unit today.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Look elsewhere I bought one today and i was excited to get it home and start transferring my old cassettes to mp3, but no chance. The sound quality is muffled and there were constant crackles even when I turned the peak level well below the red. The tape sped up and slowed down making the sound impossible to enjoy. The tapes sound so much better on my old tape deck which unfortunately I can't connect to a PC. It was truly dissapointing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible quality cassette player Although the software is ok, the cassette player is of appalling quality, and entirely inadequate for the purpose of making digital transfers owing to the unacceptable noise level.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful, save your money. Buy second-hand I bought this almost a year and a half ago, I plugged it in and it was alright until a month ago and then it packed in and no won't play with the headphones without an awful buzzing. Computer Programme was great though. Lesson: For the same price, I can buy a pretty good Pioneer Cassette Deck.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A pleasant surprise I bought this audio recorder from my local Maplin store, to replace another piece of conversion hardware which is truly dreadful. The salesperson told me honestly that the Maplin reviews for the Honestech Audio Recorder were not good. In fact, they all rated it as one-star. I bought it anyway, on the grounds that it couldn't be any worse than the one I was replacing. In fact, I've been pleasantly surprised. The instruction leaflet is sort-of-OK, if you can find the English bits among all the other languages. The supplied software is easy to install and use. The quality of the recording is good - I even have usable results from 1960s home recordings which were originally made on an amateur reel-to-reel recorder with horrendous hiss and background noise. This isn't a luxury product but it's acceptable. To avoid the need for batteries, it even has a DC socket, though you'll have to provide your own adapter. All in all, I'm quite happy with this product so far. I've given it only three stars because it's a bit basic and lacks a feature that I would have liked: a standard USB port, which would enable me to record onto a flash drive without having to attach the recorder to my computer.

I want to record audio from a soundesk (in a theatre) Would this device do that and if so what's the duration of recording possible? Thanks

Asked by: Kenm
This should be suitable, but file size would depend on the file size your PC allows.

An LP stereo pick-up connection to a Hi Fi pre-amp needs RIAA equalisation (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA) does this kit apply it in software or actively? Q1 says you can connect a turntable. Will the recorder work with the low output?

Asked by: Hi Fi Grandad
As you suspect, you will need a pre-amp to use this item with a turntable alone - see my reply to Peter. The manufacturer's website might be helpful, as could a general web search.

can you record from tapes
Asked by: phil hamm
If you mean cassettes, then the supplied player is used with USB. If you are thinking about reel to reel recordings then you need to connect an audio output to your PC sound card. Cables are supplied to connect via RCA output, or a 3.5mm headphone socket.
