Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well. I bought this 2 months ago. The first one I bought stopped working after about 10days. I got on the phone to Maplln and they were really good about replacing it. I had to send the broken one back and, within a few days, a replacement arrived. That one has worked fine so far apart from one occasion when I had some trouble. Again I rung Maplin and didn`t get far until I got transferred to a guy called Dominic who was brilliant in readjusting my computer so that the VHS to DVD worked ok again. Generally I`ve been very pleased both with the Honestech and, particularly, with the service I received from Maplin.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What is the point - unless you want to pay for experiencing crash and hang-ups?! Im a freelance videographer who has some old footage on MiniDV I needed to backup digitally so bought this a few days ago to do just that. I use a Sony DSR-V10p deck to play the tapes and go out of RCA. All was working fine till I chose 'Advanced option' to transfer to a digital file (AVI, MPEG, WMV etc) and then the crashes started. 5 hangups in less than an hour = Nothing transferred. I have a beast of an SLI edit rig designed to handle 4k which it does at 10bit effortlessly so I can only assume the crashes are down to the poorly designed software. To think I could have paid £50 for this at full price? Will be taking back for a refund on Boxing day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from it works on window 10! i purchased the more expensive dvd maker 2 which after a day i could not get to work, i swapped it for this honestech, which worked within 10 minutes of plugging it in. i recorded 9 dv tapes no stop from a faulty camcorder on its last legs, i now have 18 cds ( 2 of each tape) that will run on any machine. very easy to use, you can be more cleaver if you wish, using the advance mode but all i wanted was to back up the dv tapes while i could.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple, yet also powerful To be honest I was not expecting much from this device. I've had VHS converters before, and none have been worth what I paid for them. So I was delighted to find that this converter is actually incredibly good! Setup was simple AS LONG AS YOU READ THE GUIDE first. There is an Easy mode which really is very easy, and an advanced mode which makes it possible to do a whole lot of useful things with a VHS tape. The manual (PDF) is very clear and easy to follow. I am making MPG recordings to copy to an HDD attached to my Blu-ray player. The OS is Windows 10 64-bit. One or two (minor) caveats: Like almost all of this type there can be problems with Audio and Video getting out of sync. This device suffers far less than any other I've tried, but there were still times when it was noticeable. What is strange is that the sync is always badly out when monitoring a recording, but only slightly out when you watch the finished recording - so don't rely on the preview - do some tests first. Secondly you need a decent VHS player as a source - the Honestech seems sensitive to 'noise' from the player and your heads need to be clean or you get some blocky artifacts here and there. A major plus point is that it will handle NTSC tapes, and ones with Macrovision encoding. My verdict - Superb, 5 stars (especially for the price). Perhaps the best of the bunch.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute rubbish In spite of being advised that this would run under Windows 10 x64, the software continually froze or crashed my PC. The software is unreliable and impossible to use. I have been in contact with the manufacturer and received some things to try, but nothing has made it stable. When it did work, whilst the video quality was satisfactory, I also tried recording audio tapes and the quality was truly awful. I've returned it for a refund and the local store were very understanding. I got the feeling that this was not the first return they'd had on this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works out of the box on Windows 10 The Honestech 7.0 was the third capture device I had tried to get working with my new PC, which runs on Windows 10. Most of these devices were designed when Windows 98 was new and won't even work on Windows XP. However, Honestech has bothered to update the drivers for Windows 8 and I can confirm---as have other reviewers---that they work with Windows 10, too. Anyone who hasn't tried to find and install drivers for an outdated piece of kit won't realise what a boon this is. Even a non-tech savvy person ought to be able to get the Honestech 7.0 to work. You just insert the disc in the optical drive, wait for the Installshield wizard to open and follow the prompts. I agree with other reviewers that the printed instructions are woefully inadequate, but with luck you won't need to refer to them. The other great advantage the Honestech device has over its competitors is that it converts directly to mp2 (or a number of other file options). One earlier device I did manage to get working before I bought this produced mkv files from VHS tapes, which I had to run through conversion software on my PC (taking a further 45 mins for a 60 min tape). Bad points? So far the main one is that I won't capture S-Video input. I'm not sure whether it's just that my device is faulty or is a general problem. But results using composite input have been acceptable, especially as the signal is going to be conditioned further before it gets on a screen. In my view, the image from the mp2 file off the Honestech device is better than via my (top end) Sony DVD recorder.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it says on the tin but limited I bought this to digitise family VHS tapes Was I able to plug a VHS machine into my laptop & create a file on the laptop? Yes. Was it easy? Yes. There are two parts to the package: the Magibox (?) hardware & the Honestech software. The hardware was easy to set up & worked first time. The software also worked but is a bit limited & a little temperamental. I wanted to create MPEG files so never tried the DVD burning facility. The problem with any linear media to digital utility is that if you have a 180 minute VHS then it takes 3 hours to initially digitise it. There is no way round this. If you then want to edit it that also takes a long time. And then there's the rendering of the edited storyboard. That also takes a longgggg time. This is not a criticism of this product it is just the way it is. In summary, would I recommend this product? Yes, as it does what it says on the tin, does so quite easily & is good value around £29. The downside is that the software is limited & a bit temperamental. By that I mean it stops responding to the operating system, in my case Windows 10.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheaper and better solutions are available! I bought this to transfer old home movies and it kind of worked, but had lag issues with picture and sound. Six months later I bought a DVD recorder for £20 and I must say that the quality is 1000x better using the DVD recorder. Picture and sound quality is extremely poor and it wasn't the tape as I did a comparison with DVD recorder and this product. Avoid!

Is the dvd that is made set to a country zone, if it is made in the UK will it work in the USA. If I save it to a USB stick or external hard drive WILL that work in the USA

Asked by: Eddie Mac
If you make a disk then it will be region coded based on the region code of the drive you burn it with, and will only playback in that region. If you create a file (avi, mpeg or other) rather than a disc the the file will be universal.

I just want to check that the VHS cassette is inserted into this device. i.e - I don't need any other hardware.

Asked by: SandyMul
No, this item requires a VHS player or cassette player to first play the footage you want to convert.
