What level of performance can I expect from this SSD?
HyperX Predator SSD offers larger capacities and incredible speeds with both compressible and incompressible data to take your system to the edge. Faster than SATA-based SSDs, it delivers speeds up to 1400MB/s read and 600MB/s write for ultra-responsive multitasking and an overall faster system.

What is the benefit of the HHHL adapter?
A Half-Height, Half-Length (HHHL) adapter works with many existing motherboards with at least a PCI-Express x4 slot available. The HHHL adapter comes with both standard and low-profile brackets to fit in slim profile desktop builds.

How efficient is the SSD?
With no moving parts, this SSD consumes less power and produces less heat than a mechanical HDD. A cooler running drive allows you to comfortably use a laptop on your lap without the noise of the fan cancelling out the sound from your speakers. This lightens the load on your PC’s power supply and cooling system, lengthening your battery life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Supurb upgrade for existing system Installed in 2nd Generation i5 system, which is now booting and loading apps faster than a 6th Gen system with a SATA III SSD drive. Easy to set as boot drive from BIOS. May not consider for a new build as only PCIe 2.0, but as I said excellent for an upgrade if you have a 4x PCIe slot free - often the case if you do not have a dedicated graphics card.

Can this be used as a boot drive as booting from pci-e isn't mentioned in my bios settings?

Hmmm, not so sure about Maplin's resident boffins I'm afraid. In my experience, having dived in to buying a PCIe SSD + suitable connector adapter card for my c.2006 motherboard whilst waiting for their ultimately duff answer to the question about about speeds / versions of PCIe slots, I was pleasantly surprised to find my board (Supermicro X7DA8) permitted permitted me to install Windows 10 on to the SSD and boot from it, with no other conventional HDD present, despite (i) no manual option for PCIe in the bios and (ii) Supermicro's own website/help pages having to go into some lengths on how to get more recent boards to work. So, all in all, a bit hit and miss and a gamble

I'm confused about these things, in terms of speed on older motherboards. I've seen something about PCI Express revision 1.1 (as I have, in making use of an old board) does 250MB/s. BUT ... I then see all this talk about lanes. Does 4 lanes mean 1GB/s?
