External docking stations are popular because of its flexibility and compatibility. However, because it is for external use, the interface limits the transfer speed of your hard drive while only allowing one to be use at a time. In a standard computer case, there are several 5.25" bays usually reserved for your DVD ROM drive, however, will not naturally fit with your 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives without some assistance. We also want to create a much faster and smoother transition from external to internal setups. Using the MB971SP-B DuoSwap, you will save precious desktop space by integrating both 3.5" & 2.5" slots into a single 5.25" bay. This gives you the ability to expand and easily go from your external docking station to your computer in just seconds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Complete flexibility This will be the second Icy Dock I have fitted to my PC & I am really impressed with the level of flexibility my original one gives me. I use 6 operating systems; 5 on SSD's & 1 on a 3.5" HDD. The Icy Dock allows me to change systems as I please & it's easy to use too. The second dock will be for backup & media drives. Fitting is easy: you need 2 SATA cables (SATA 2 or 3) & 1 power cable. It's about a 30 minute job maximum. In operation, the eject mechanisms are stiff, & take a while to ease. After around 40 operations, they are fine. One criticism is that a standard 3.5" HDD tends to run very hot, as there isn't any cooling with the dock. Try to install it as near as possible to the best airflow, i.e. close to your inlet fan. SSD's don't have this problem, but it's best to keep them as cool as possible. The only other criticism is that the power switches can be operated inadvertently when installing a drive. It becomes quite interesting when your screen suddenly freezes because you just knocked the operating system off!! A nice feature is the LED's for each drive. Your case LED's are fine, but these are a nice bonus. It is worth stating that the extra electronics used for the dock in no way impede the operating speeds of your system: I get exactly the same SSD data transfer rates now as I did before fitting the dock. The Icy Dock is a really good investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very useful dock for backup purposes I bought this a few days ago to allow me to make backing up my Media Center which has 16TB of films and shows on it. I already had the backup drives just needed to incrementally add files as necessary. Even so I did try copying massive amounts of video data onto some spare harddrives to determine if there might be a overheating issue. An old & slow 500TB sata drive that I copied about 300gb/1hr+ of video data did get rather hot as the the other reviewer noted, about 46C but at the time I also had another dock above with an IDE drive in it that limited air flow so that might have been the reason. Any way removing that and using a newer Hitachi 2TB Green type driver ( 5700rpm ) faired better barely getting warm to the touch after 3 hrs of copying about 1TB of data. I also put my W7 boot drive SSD in the ssd slot and this remained cool at approx 29C. My case is an Antec one that is reasonable well sealed and has front fans moving air over the hardisk bays ( but not the ICYDOCK) and a rear case fan and I could feel a slight draught at the front of the ICYDOCK. The ambient temperature in my room is a modest 19C so that helps. So it seems that the ICYDOCK can be run cool with suitable drives, case layout, running hot isnt inevitable. Having a rear fan that will suck air in from the front is probably important. As far as performance is concerned, the eject works fine but make sure that the wires at the back inside are not in the way of the sata plug otherwise they may foul the insertion of a 3.5" disc and stop it locking ( affected me, so i pushed the wires down ). The dock allows on demand insertion and removal even with Windows 7 , just use the task bar icon to do that then switch off and eject physically. Performance speed is not affected by the dock. So I am very pleased with my purchase and can recomend it if used thoughtfully. I now have a 2TB installed in the dock permanently and all seems fine temperature wise. This review is written in November rather than the summer and that will be another factor. Maplins price by the way is cheaper than many other sources.
