  • Use your IDE HDD on a SATA motherboard

Product overview

  • Use your IDE HDD on a SATA motherboard

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I have a brand new MSI AM1i motherboard that is SATA only, and I wanted to use an IDE hard drive on it. Connected it up as described. The instructions are contradictory because in one diagram they picture the switch one way, but the description fits the switch being the other way. Tried it both ways, but the motherboard absolutely refused to even glance at it, even though it recognised the SATA DVD drive perfectly easily. Tried swapping sockets, tried swapping cables. There was clearly power to the device as the green light came on, although it took longer for the green light to come on than it took for the motherboard to go zooming past that stage. Tried doing a warm reboot (CTRL-ALT-DEL) so that the device would still be powered up when the motherboard went looking for it, but still no joy. Unfortunately had lost receipt.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Futile Modern operating systems make this technology obsolete (more or less) - Windows 10 still won't speak to the old IDE hard drive because of the mis-match in protocols. Other products much more suitable (Caddies/enclosures which output to USB).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't work Tried to use this to read the contents of an IDE drive onto a more modern SATA system. Didn't work - with the switch in one direction the machine hung, in the other, the disk wouldn't show up. As others have noted, there are no instructions or documentation, so at that point you're lost.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Okay thought it would do Bought a different connector version 2- 3 years back. Critisisim include lack of set up instructions and the open pcb board is not in any antistatic packaging. As a result drive was not recognised by OS.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It didn’t work I bought this about 6 weeks ago - had to rewire the power source as the cables weren’t secured but yet this connector failed to power the adapter.

IDE to SATA or SATA to IDE Adapter: Code: N40HN: Is N40HN self contained or does it require any additional adapator for the power source? This is for installation of SATA drive in old legacy (IDE) PC. Thanks.

Asked by: TeoK
This item converts data only, you will need to provide power to the HDD still. If you are using a power supply that doesn't have SATA power connections you may need to convert a 4 pin molex to SATA power. See the following product:

what position does the switch have to be in

Asked by: mick
This changes it from sata to ide or ide to sata, This switch position should be found in the manual for the item. The only other was is to install the item try the switch in one position if the drive is not detected try the switch in the other postilion.
