Rated 4 out of 5 by from Responds quickly to changes in temperature and is useful both close up for very accurate readings or across a distance for ambient temp readings. One thing that should be mentioned (not a negative just not mentioned anywhere in the bumph or description) is that this will only read the surface temperature of the item being scanned, it wont give any indication of core temp i.e. for food service. Other than that a very handy piece of kit for rapid and accurate temperature reading!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Responds very fast as you point it at different objects. Warm patches on the carpet show where you have been sitting. Should be great in winter to show where most heat is escaping from your house. So far, excellent. It is also worth mentioning that this device quickly shows the large variations in temp within your fridge. Knowing the cooler and warmer areas is useful.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bought this in 2011 and found it read 2 degrees high when compared to 2 calibrated sources at 25 C. 24 months later it reads 4.5 high. So not suitable for use as a standalone reference. Also there is no access to calibrate it. So disappointed at this price point. That said, it consistently reads high, so ok if you only read around mid 20’s and do the maths. Wonder how far out it would be at 250 C?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from UTTER JUNK and NOT worth the money Had this a couple of years and used it a few dozen times and when i came to use it for the first time in about 6 months recently it was reading minus (-) and giving extreme false readings and at one point was displaying minus 155 degrees !!!! , how the it can display that when its maximum is minus 50 is beyond me. something that was about 30 degrees , this was showing 3.9 degrees thats not right. Disconnected battery for 1 minute and it made no difference , changed the battery and again no difference. Took it to the shop and the staff confirmed it was indeed faulty , but as its out of warranty can not help. for nearly Ј60 i paid at the time i expect it to last longer than that. No reset or callibration button nothing. I do not even rate this at 1 star , more like minus 8 star. Do not buy , i would just pay for a much cheaper one elsewhere avoid , dissapointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from N85FR infrared themometer I have recently purchased one of these and I am very satisfied with it. I checked the accuracy using a pan of boiling water, and the reading was 102.5°C, which is very good considering emissivity uncertainties (see below). I checked the linearity of the readings using a thermocouple and an aluminium hotplate. The readings were linear from 20°C to 100°C, within experimental error. In both cases the readings were made by taking them from grey PVC tape stuck on the hot surface. The instructions state that the emissivity of the surface to be observed is assumed to be 95%. I compared the readings taken from the grey PVC tape with those from the aluminium surface blackened with a black felt tip on the same hotplate at ~100°C. The black felt tip region gave a value of only 0.7 x that from the PVC, so clearly the actual emissivity is very important for these thermometers. This instrument has a distance to spot diameter of 12:1 which means that relatively small areas can be examined at distance.

What is the optimal distance from the object being measured i.e. the merge point of the lasers?

This is calculated using what is know as the distance to spot ratio, the D/S for this device it is 12:1. If the target you are measuring is six inches in size, then the maximum distance at which you can reliably measure the temperature of the target is 48 inches (8:1 x 6 = 72).

Hi there, How do I change the setup from degrees c to degrees f thanks

Open the Battery Compartment. Slide out the battery. There is no need to disconnect it. At the top of the compartment toward the rear of the trigger, there is a small slide switch to select Deg' F to the left and Deg' C to the right with the trigger facing you. It is also on PCB Legend beneath switch. Replace battery and close compartment cover...Good to go.

Is there a correction factor for surfaces with other emissivity? Not every surface is black at 0.95. A correction factor for different optical surface finishes would be useful.

The hand grip drops down at the front, you should see two finger holes to at the top to pull this down.

These come ready calibrated to the accuracy stated in the manual, but no user calibration is supported.
