ION Film to PC Negative Holder

• Spare film holder for film to PC scanners (Order Codes: A99HW and N29GH)

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This is not simple plug and play! After installing driver and software, trying to use scanner caused blue screen error which closes your PC down. Took a long time to sort out this problem using advice from Microsoft Windows Error reporting. Now able to use, but in spite of calibrating several times, I think resulting images far too bright. Overall, disappointing. Unless I can find a way of getting better images through even more hours of trying, would not really recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is not a bad scanner but you will only get good results if you download the latest drivers and the latest version of PhotoImpression6 software. This latest driver gives you the ability manually adjust both the exposure level and colour. Without this you will get fairly randomly over exposed scans which are useless. Also the 3600 dpi resolution does not produce better images than 1800 dpi. Overall good images and pretty quick to use.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ion Slide Scanner Installation was no problem in Windows XP. I am importing into Photoshop 7 where it appears as OVT Scanner, rather than using the Arcsoft software supplied. Most pics need the brightness turning down to -5 or even -10. It is better to underexpose in the scanner and adjust brightness later (Picasa Fill-in light is particularly good at this).I've had some really excellent results from 40 year old Kodachrome slides using Unsharp Filter and Auto levels in Photoshop. However, I've just noticed that the brightness level changes across the scan. Try saving a scan without a slide present. With the brightness turned down to say -5, my unit shows darker banding on the left of the picture instead of a uniform gray, and looking back over previous scans, this is clearly visible. I get the impression that this is not due to uneven backlighting, but to defects in the optics/receptor. If it can't be fixed, then I would regard this as a major problem.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I can only agrere with the previous comment. I am very dissapointed with the quality of the scans, to all intent and purpose they are unusable. Do some research on the net before buying, you will need to spend at least twice the price of the Ion to get a scanner giving usable results.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I didn't have any trouble making it work, the software installed easily and the scanner worked first time. My problem is the image quality. The scanner is billed as 5 Mpixel but most of this is wasted because of the optical quality. Many slides appear out of focus (why not all of them) and even the best are not really sharp. Also, the scanner seems unable to accomodate the brightness range of a typical slide. Gradation of colour also seems poor. OK, this is a cheap device and you shouldn't expect too much. A good film camera costs 100s of pounds and film has exceptional imaging abilities which are shown off at their best in transparencies. This device, costing much less, is trying to copy the result. A degree of loss of quality is inevitable. But the results from this gadget don't seem match even a fairly low end digital camera, even when viewed at say 6" x 4" size (which is only a small percentage of the full size of a 5 Mpixel image). Ultimately, I thought, do I want to spend hour upon hour scanning my hundreds of slides to get this sort of a result. Answer? No.
