How does the solar light operate?
Solder a garden light (manufactures code 1034) that switches on when it gets dark. The solar cell fills the included solar AA battery with power from the sun, and as darkness falls the light turns on with a white glow. The solar cell is waterproof as it has been resin encapsulated, but the rest of the kit requires a waterproof enclosure (not included) to be left outdoors.

What can I learn from this kit?
This kit is a great way to learn about sustainable energy sources, as it gives you a look at all the components that make up a solar light. Learn to solder resistors, capacitors, LEDs, inductors and diodes, and see how they connect into a working circuit. This kit requires soldering and may require wire cutters and wire strippers.

Is this kit easy to solder?
This kit is great for beginners as it is easy to solder. Once you’ve built your kit you can fit it inside a waterproof enclosure (not included) to protect it outside. This kit is shaped to fit inside an old jar but there are many other containers that you could use to great effect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fun little kit This is a fun little kit, easy to assemble as long as you can use a soldering iron. You need to find a jam jar or similar with a large lid that you can put the solar panel on, and you will need to make small holes to put the wires through to the circuit board. You will need to use silicone mastic or hot-melt glue to fix and seal the solar cell to the outside of the lid and to fix the circuit board inside the lid. This information is not included in the instructions, which are otherwise clear. There is even a short explanation of how the circuit works. The kit would be suitable for a teenager as long as they have been shown how to use a soldering iron safely and correctly. The components are reasonably-sized so great skill is not needed, but it will be helpful to have some basic understanding of simple electronic components. You'll need some basic hand tools like small pliers and snips.
