Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tester - it does exactly what is says on the box. I installed a complete network and the tester found one crossover fault which was easily remedied, a great bit of kit. Just one slight disappointment Maplin halved the price 2 days after I purchased it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Item works well and appears fairly robust. I have used it daily since receiving it. An improvement would be separate RJ 11 sockets as RJ 45 adaptors a little delicate and prone to loss but good value for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What an incredibly useful bit of kit I cannot fault this device. I am helping family and friends install Swann CCTV systems which use BNC for the signal and CAT6 Ethernet cables for the LAN connection. Because its necessary to trim down supplied CAT6 cables and the many metres of BNC ready-mades to prevent having great reels of spare lengths tucked behind the PVR, it's essential to be able to test both LAN and BNC connections - which ths delightful little bag of tricks does so elegantly. The unit is very robust and will last for donkeys years's, I'm sure of that. It's so easy to fit RJ45 plugs to CAT6 cables, using a proper crimper, but it is essential to be able to test the connections. It even tests crossovers AND RJ11 telephone cables too. And it cost less that £5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LAN Tester Simple and intuitive to use. This showed a cabling fault in a network on it's first outing.Perfect for my requirements.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Well made but ridiculous drain on battery The product appears to be well made, but a brand new Duracell battery costing £4.99 only lasted for testing 5 cables which is crazy! I bought another battery and the same thing happened, after the 5th cable the battery was exhausted. This is a very poor product for testing cables due to the cost of the batteries.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Plastic fantastic Cheap and nasty (and the supplied case is even cheaper and nastier) but the important thing is it does exactly what it says on the tin. Simple continuity test cycles through each pin in order, with a slow mode for the hard-of-thinking/verifying crossover cables. Haven't used the RJ11/BNC, and am not ever likely to (can't remember the last time I came across a token ring, and I don't do telephony). The unit I got looks superficially different from the one in the picture (different colours, label text, typefaces etc.) but is the same shape and basic layout so I'm guessing this is just one of those generic Chinese factory items that just comes however you happen to get it on the day. Only down side is it seems a touch heavy on the battery use, plus the price seems a little high for something so obviously cheaply made, hence four stars instead of 5, but like I said it does exactly what it's supposed to. If you're after an all day tester you might want to look for something a bit higher up the quality ladder.

I want to test some hidden wiring which we currently use for the telephone line to see if it was installed with cat5e cable so it can be converted for networking . It has an RJ45 termination. Can this be used?

Asked by: Sc0lie
This device would test for continuity and allow you to check if it is a crossover type cable, but it would not measure any data rate or other information about the cable type, just that it is intact and how it is wired.

Using the supplied RJ45 link cable. LED''s 1-8 light in sequence, but the G LED only lights on the TX side but not the RX side. Is this correct?
Asked by: Tony
That is fine the G stands for ground and is only tested on FTP cabling.
