What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or ‘winter depression’ is linked to reduced exposure to sunlight, which may affect your production of melatonin, serotonin and disrupt your body’s functions and patterns. Melatonin is a hormone that makes you feel sleepy, and serotonin is a hormone that affects your mood, appetite and sleep. Lower serotonin levels are linked to feelings of depression. Your body also uses sunlight to time various important functions, such as waking up, so the lower light levels during winter may disrupt your body clock and lead to symptoms of SAD and general fatigue.

How can the light help combat the effects of SAD?
Using a SAD light for a few hours at a range of 15cm away will help increase your levels of serotonin and decrease your levels of melatonin, this in turn will brighten your mood and make you feel more awake – giving you more energy.

The Maplin SAD light has two fluorescent lights, with offer 10,000 lux light for an incredible 10,000 hours.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great buy. Working at the computer is much more pleasant with the light box on for an hour or so. My partner has used it every day since we bought it 10 days ago, and has noticed a difference in mood. If you close your eyes and put your face close to the box, it really does feel almost like real sunshine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every home should have one! It certainly lifts my spirits on short grey days just being on in the room where I'm working. Well worth it,

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This light box seems to have lifted the mood of my partner. She had been suffering from 'no sunshine blues' for a number of weeks prior to using it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was given this as a Christmas gift from my husband got to say I'm well pleased with it. Has made a difference to my energy levels would definitely recommend this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought this model of SAD lamp from Maplin 2 years ago now, and I must say it really does help with the winter blues. The light from it is very bright, and I usually sit with it on for a about an hour first thing in the morning during the dark months, whilst I check my emails and have my breakfast. I find I wake up a lot easier and my energy levels and mood are greatly improved. I do notice the difference if I forget to use it for a while. I've found the longer you can sit yourself in front of it the better, and if you have it as close to your face as possible, you don't need to use it for quite as long but I have also learnt not to have it on too late in the day, or I can't get to sleep at night. Being a student, this can be useful if you are pulling an all-nighter studying, but it does take me quite a few hours to wind down and let my brain know it's now night time, before I begin to feel tired. After two years, it's still going strong. I've not had to replace the tubes, and it's good to know that replacements are still available from Maplin if they should go at some point. The only downside is that it can flicker a bit whilst it's warming up. It doesn't do it all the time though, and well, I'm used to it now. All in all, it's the best ???50 I have ever spent!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What can I say works a treat especially with the cold dark weather outdoors, 1/2 hour in the morning and ready to go for the days work ahead. Thanks

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic Light Box that - for me at least - works. Great quality and very easy, the only down side is it's large size. well worth buying and using though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had this over 2 years.. used every day for 2-3 hours as a main light , still going strong, really works to pick up the mood during the gloomy season.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a nice unit, very bright. Good value compared to some others, especially with the extra discount. Would make a very good work light.
Date published: 2014-11-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's BIG! Don't overlook the size quoted, it's around the size of a reasonably sized tray, it's also quite pleasingly bright, which I guess is the idea :-) Given it's large, the floppy out stand is a bit flimsy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pack of lies The spec on the website clearly states 10,000 lux at 40cm, which would translate to a treatment time of around 20 minutes Opened up the packaging, read the manual, which says 10,000 lux at 15cm. Obviously noone in their right mind is going to sit 15cm away from a light, so they recommend sitting at a 40cm distance, with a treatment time of 60 minutes, or 60cm, for a treatment time of 120 minutes.. The entire reason for buying this was to reduce the treatment time from my previous low-powered device. Very very annoyed. Returning for a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An absolutely lovely lamp, it does take up quite a bit of space but it's worth it. The only thing I would improve is that it's got quite a short power cord. I LOOOVE the bright light it emits and I can sit by it for hours. I've been using mine steadily for about four months now and only now is one of the light tubes starting to flicker. Five stars!
Date published: 2014-11-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, got it on a timer and it wakes me up nicely on those cold dark mornings.
Date published: 2014-11-18
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, honest product. Appears to produce the same light from the same tubes as expensive products but at a fraction of the price. Minor point: at ~1.5m cable is too short.
Date published: 2014-11-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not sure what to expect when using a SAD light, but happy with the unit and far from sad at the price. And it's a nice bright light for reading or close work even if it doesn't do much for my mood. Having said that, it is unfair to judge it after only a couple of weeks. Ask again after the gloomy winter!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A REAL giggle . . . I've suffered with SAD year on year for as long as I can remember (now 47). Today I went into Napkins to buy some electrical connectors and whilst walking around I found one of these SAD lights on the floor, shining very brightly. I instantly recognised what it was as I'd researched them before but had always been put off by the price of other brands. So purely as an excersise to prove the SAD light concept as just a fad, I decided to stand in front of it for a couple of minutes. Now I have been feeling very depressed because of the atrociously bad weather here in Cumbria the past few months, so I was stunned when, out of nowhere, an uncontrollable (ear to ear) grin spread across my face after just 30 seconds, followed by a fit of giggling about nothing. Suffice it to say, I bought it (before anyone else could cos it was the last one). Now writing this review sat in front of it and an definitely feeling an improvement already. Grab one before they sell out I say.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent delivery time. Thought it had a free-standing tripod rather than just a photo frame type pull-out flap. However, if you don't want it on a desk or shelf it is very easy to hook it onto a wall with a single screw and can then be easily unhooked for positioning elsewhere. Appears to be working well and flicker not too noticeable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bright enough for me. I bought this in the autumn, and did find a small benefit. Using it, in combination with antidepressant medication, I felt good until mid January, but after that I declined at a fast rate, with all the symptoms of SAD and even increasing my medication and using the light for 2 hours a day had no affect. Then I decided to try the light box for an hour with it placed less then 6 inches from my face, and within a couple of hours I went from seriously depressed into mania. I bought the light to see if I would respond to light therapy, and it has done it's job and shown that I do, but it is not bright enough to use in a convenient way. I have now built a much larger and brighter light strip, I will keep the maplin unit as something I can take away, as my home built unit is not portable.
Date published: 2014-11-18
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's a nice light. Be aware though that the unit is large, about the size of an A3 sheet of paper and not particularly pretty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this product. It makes me feel better in the "sad" months, I mean October, November, December and January. This lamp makes spring in my dark room. And it even helps my plants to be green, beautiful and healthy. Everybody should try it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A nice product. Nice styling. I'm very pleased with my new SAD light. It's very bright and really wakes me up in the morning. I feel energised after having it on next to me whilst getting ready for work and eating my breakfast. I'm really experiencing the benefit from using it. I wish I bought one years ago. :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from seems to help- a lot! i can only say what this lamp does for me. the year i bought it, i was already about a month into a pretty horrible struggle with short, dark days. the instant i turned it on for the 1st time was an "ahhhhh!" moment. like downing a cold drink on a hot day. i could physically feel the light going into me. it was a steady improvement from there. the 2nd year i failed to get the lamp out proactively early in September, and so suffered a gnarly week or 2. this year, i'm happy to say i've got it out- the day after the 1st proper dull, mistly, colder autumn weather. it doesn't magic the world perfect at the flick of a switch, but it does make it possible to cope with the winter blues. i've even been able to stop using it as soon as the 1st longer day arrives. strange, or maybe not so strange when you consider how different a sunny day makes you feel compared to a rainy one. it's not "only the weather"! it's your surroundings

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the job - perfect for this dreary winter, hangs on the wall Bought for my mum who has dementia to relieve 'sun downing' - she was getting particularly confused in late afternoon/early evening once the days got shorter. It has really helped - one day when we forgot to put it on the hyper-confusion returned. We keep it on all day unless it's sunny - there were a couple of sunny days I think. And now the lamp's on offer!

Is this light certified as a medical device for use in SAD? And is it screened to filter out harmful UV light? Thanks.

There are a lot of SAD lights that are not really SAD lights and just use ordinary high intensity lights that don't produce the correct wavelengths. Can you confirm that this is a real SAD light that produces the light spectrum suitable to treat SAD.

Asked by: pdcm
No, this is not a medically certified SAD light, and uses daylight reproduction bulbs so only gives light, not vitamins or wavelengths.

Okay, I worded the question incorrectly. I understand that light therapy is not medically proven. I should have asked " does the manufacturer list this item as ' approved for medical use'"?

Asked by: Highlandminger
Am trying to find out the answer to this question myself. Will be near a maplin store tomorrow so have ordered one for click and collect. I understand if the item is medically approved it should bear the CE0123 mark. From the video I can see it has a CE mark but not the number attached. I will let you know once I collect the lamp.

hi could you tell me what it's like electricity wise , will it affect it  much?

Asked by: lexstar123
That's nonsensical. Watts are a measure of instantaneous power, not a quantity, so you must just mean that it requires 72 watts continuously. Which would of course mean that it will use 0.072 kWh every hour. you would then need to find out how much you pay for a kWh of electricity.
