How does this differ from a standard portable hard drive?
The Maplin portable SSD has no moving parts, allowing for a much faster data transfer rate than a traditional mechanical hard drive or a USB flash drive. SSDs also have no moving parts which gives them a much lower failure rate, meaning your data will be safer for longer. The Maplin Portable SSD gives you a reliable drive that is lightweight, easy to use and perfect for carrying your favourite pictures, music and movies with you.

How much can I store on this drive
This solid state drive has 256GB of storage, so you have plenty of space for your files. It is possible to store 14,400 images taken at 10 megapixel, 640 minutes of 1080p video, 16,000 MP3 songs and still have enough room for 64GB of office files.

Will USB 3.0 work with my computer?
USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1. This means you can use your drive with almost any computer, some newer TVs and even some soundbars. This versatile device allows you to transfer files, watch films on your television and play your favourite tunes at full blast.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not as fast as I expected from usb3 sad drive Not as fast as I expected from usb3 sad drive but adequate for iTunes library though slow to load iPhoto library. Bought this to free space on my macbook air 128 ssd as wanted to bootcamp win7 64bit ultimate on hard drive.

Why are the write speeds so low compared to the same speeds quoted for the Samsung, WD, offerings

Asked by: Witstert
Dominic, Therefore, according to you, it is the "wrapper" that determines the read/write speeds? I am stunned that as a Representative of Maplin offers such a "weak" answer. You say that Samsung and WD are premium brands. I consider Samsung to be a more "premium" brand than WD, but the latter is more expensive and both have similar "write" speeds. I suggest that Maplin does itself no favours offering such inferior products. THe "read" speed quoted for the Maplin SSDs compares favourably with those of the "premium" brands but the "write" speed quoted for the Maplin SSDs is so inferior that blaming the difference on the "premium" brands. To admit that Maplin is offering inferior quality SSDs is not good advertising! Kind regards and Happy New Year, Ron Platt
