What is this Wi-Fi device used for?
Using the mobile internet connection provided by an inserted 3G data SIM card, this router can share the connection with multiple devices. Transfer speeds of up to 150Mbps gives you the ability to share files quickly between connected devices. The 3G data SIM card provides you with up to 42Mbps download and 7.2Mbps upload speeds, for a good internet connection. Simply insert a 3G data SIM card inside this router to create a 3G wireless network, then just connect your devices to it and you’ll gain access to the internet in no time.

What is the RJ45/Ethernet port and USB port used for?
Using the web based interface you can set the router to be used in different modes for various applications. Plugging this router to your cable/ADSL modem via the WAN port, provides you with normal wireless router applications. On the other hand, if you plug this router into a LAN port this router can be changed for use as an access point or client. As an access point you can extend your existing wireless network by connecting it to your router. Under the client mode, you can use this router as a wireless adapter for wired only devices.

Can I use this on the go?
Supplied with a 3000mAh battery you are able to get up to six hours of wireless browsing from this device. The Micro USB port is used for charging the battery to full and the USB 2.0 port can be used to charge USB devices. It can provide 5V at 0.5A, so you can use this as an emergency charging device for your mobile phone or other device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good piece of kit Takes a standard size SIM and micro SD memory card. Has a USB outlet port to power (or charge up) USB devices from the internal battery, eg mobile phones. Router is charged by a micro USB, cable supplied but no charger. Network port to attach computer or use as an Access point. Picks up moderate signal and I have had speeds up to 8.6M down, 2.3M up but weaker signal = slower speed. I assume a stronger signal would take it up to the 13M quoted. Battery lasted 10 hours, very impressed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works OK - but no instructions! As a 3g wireless hotspot, I find this is slower than using my tablet but still quite effective (in fact, I am using it now to submit this). The problem is that it takes a micro-sd card and suggests you can use it for data storage - but nowhere does it say how to connect. It also has a full size USB port which I suspect can also be used for storage. I came to the Maplin site today to see if there is any further information / drivers / etc available, but it appears not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good performance Performs well in good signal area. Very easy to set up. However my unit gets very hot with extended use and can lock up. Allow to cool down and reset and away it will go for another 4 hours or so. Shame otherwise very good product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bought this today and can't get it to work. Have tried with EE and Virgin data enabled sims. Entered APN settings manually but still does not connect to 3G. As an aside, the web interface is in broken English which should tell you all you need to know about the quality of this device. It's going back.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from SD card NAS excellent but problem charging While it worked, this was an excellent device. Wireless worked well to allow connections between devices on my narrowboat and to the 3G network. My favorite feature was the ability to set it up as a samba server so that an internal SD card appeared on the network as a shared drive, and the ability to restrict this by users/passwords. Traveling, that meant I could download stuff using my tablet or phone on the bus, transfer to the SD card on the router, and then retrieve it from the router to my laptop in the office, rather than having several devices open at once. Also, the only shared drive was the router, rather than having to set up several devices and then needing to transfer between the only two that weren't :) I still haven't found anything else which does both 3G and network fileserver. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with its power, on a sample of 2. The first simply stopped charging after 2 weeks. At that point, Maplin provided a replacement. After 2 months, the same thing happened to the second. Since, by this time, I'd lost the receipt and packaging, I investigated it. It seems that it's started using power even when switched off. I can remove the battery and charge it separately, but the router gets warm immediately it's replaced, before it's actually turned on. Dismantling it, the Qualcomm chip gets too hot to touch when there's battery power, even when turned off. As a consequence, the battery is alway flat when I need it. Great idea, not sure about the build.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from CAT5 problems On the face of it this is good - connects to 3G with no hassle until you plug in your CAT5 cable. I bought this to replace a Three MiFi I bought from Maplin about three years ago mainly because of the CAT5 functionality. The moment you plug in a CAT5 it disconnects from the 3G network and won't reconnect again. It can take anything from 5 mins to an hour of unplugging and re-plugging to get the thing to hold a 3G connection and allow surfing from the LAN. I have tried other CAT5 cables, I have tried plugging it into a different router. Same thing happens every time. This is such a pity as this would be a 5* item if this basic functionality worked. Admin via the web interface is easy. It simply works with any sim card for any network... it really is fab, apart from the fact that it disconnects from the 3G network the moment you plug in the CAT5. Boo! Hissss! (well it is Panto time!)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A plastic spoon would be more use It simply does not do what it says. I wanted to be able to connect my tablet and laptop to the Internet on the move, e.g. on a train. This thing is useless. I would be better off using a plastic spoon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect router and Ethernet !! Firstly this router can do both wifi and Ethernet connection plus 3G. You just have to change a setting in the web utilities. So you can have a proper mini network running with web via 3G, perfect!! I used a full size 3 sim and was online in literally seconds. Plus it has a battery pack for on the go access.

I am using this as a data upload for a Lorex security system..It works when switched on but disconnects after 10/12 hours. (EE 3G) The Lorex system is not wireless so is cable connected

Asked by: 101Bob
This could be a connection issue through the use of mobile data, we would not normally recommend the use of 3/4G connections for the upload of CCTV feeds, especially from multiple cameras. From what you have described, this sounds like a possible data cap imposed by EE and would suggest contacting them to confirm.

Have you made progress in sourcing replacement batteries for this? I have found a China supplier but it requires me to buy 50! :-( My battery is swollen and won't hold a charge any more

Asked by: Emyr
On this occasion Maplin do not stock a product that exactly meets your requirements, or indeed anything close enough to offer you as an alternative.

How many devices can be connected at one time please?

Asked by: bobj
The maximum is roughly 8 simultaneous users, however depending on the applications the addition of multiple users will reduce the speed for all users.

For previous question.Stated under overview, "Under the client mode, you can use this router as a wireless adapter for wired only devices. " When used as an wireless adapter for Ethernet wired device does it use the 3G network or other WiFi Network?

Asked by: gan ainm
Once the device is connected by a ethernet cable to a router the 3G is automatically shut off and it will use the WIFI from the router. If no ethernet is connected it will use 3G.
