Rated 3 out of 5 by from Laminating queen! I previously had a Maplin laminator and was very impressed with it's reliability and the price. After 18 months of heavy usage, it stopped working so I decided to invest in this new model! I bought it instore. It was packed well and is a neat, slick looking machine. It has both a hot and cold function, however, when I turned it on, only the cold setting would work. I am going to take it back to the store and ask to swap the item. I think it's just a one off problem with this particular machine. I have always found Maplin staff helpful, so fingers crossed they will be able to exchange the item (typical, I have lost the receipt in the Christmas madness!!)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Basic, but capable I bought this laminator to replace one I had used for over 5 years. The new laminator was cheap, but it is very slow to heat up and does not have the capacity to laminate different thicknesses of card. It is basic, but it does the job with single sheet paper.

What exactly is cold laminating and why or when would you use it?

Asked by: HazelJane
A quick search on-line found the below information "Hot lamination is the most common and durable lamination method and is generally preferred over cold lamination. Hot laminators use a heat-activated adhesive that is heated as it passes through the laminator. The downside to hot laminators is that some items (for example, some photographs) can not handle the heat required to apply the lamination. Cold laminators use a pressure-sensitive adhesive that does not need to be heated. The laminator uses rollers that push the sheets of lamination together. Cold laminators are faster and easier to use than hot laminators, and they are safe for nearly all flat items. "
