Why use HDMI?
HDMI is a highly versatile cable that combines high definition video and multi-channel audio into one cable. They are commonly used for connecting TVs to set satellite/cable boxes, Blu-ray/DVD players and gaming devices, such as Xbox One and PS4 consoles. It’s also used in PC connectivity and mobile devices.

What is DVI?
DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface and comes in different forms. The main types of DVI are DVI-D, DVI-A, and DVI-I. DVI-D is a digital only signal which is directly compatible with HDMI. DVI-A is an analogue only signal which is directly compatible with VGA. DVI-I is an integrated connection which combines both DVI-D and DVI-A.

Will it work if i connect the dvi-d to my computer and have the hdmi connect to my monitor?

Asked by: Daniel
This cable will connect the HDMI out of the computer to the DVI-D input of the monitor. It does not work the other way around.

I am looking at connecting my laptop to a monitor to play images through it. My laptop has a HDMI socket only so want a cable to allow me to play you tube videos through the monitor. In terms of music I’m fine but I need the image on the monitor.

Asked by: Petebooboo
If the monitor has a DVI-D socket then this cable will connect the HDMI out of the Laptop to the DVI-D input of the monitor. Typically when you connect a HDMI to your Laptop it will try to push the audio out via the HDMI connect, you can override this in the sound mixer and force the sound to another/alternate preferred sound device (speakers / Bluetooth headphones etc.).
