What can I use this light for?
This stylish nightlight has a number of unique features, making it a great lighting solution for your home. Ideal for use on landings and in hallways, the nightlight activates for 20 seconds when movement is sensed. If the power is interrupted, the light automatically turns on creating an emergency. If you remove the light from its base, it can also be used as an easy-to-find torch. To activate, simply charge the light for eight hours prior to first use, and leave power switch on in order to maintain battery charge.

How is this light powered?
The nightlight is powered directly from a mains socket. Simply plug it in and turn it on. The nightlight is also powered from a built-in rechargeable battery, which will automatically turn on the torch function if the mains power supply is lost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bought 4 of these on Saturday having seen a similar product at a friends house. The unit is really slim and gives off a brilliant white light which is activated when the movement sensor is triggered. Have placed one on each landing and near the fuse box in case of power cut. Brilliant product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Of the 4 I bought 3 have now failed. They have been replaced by Maplins as I didn't want a refund. Still believe this is a great piece of equipment but perhaps there is a fault in the product that hasn't been noticed yet? Will see haw the replacements get on.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Brilliant Product - But Eventually Die I bought 4 of these units just over a year ago. They are simply brilliant. But, they do seem to die. My 4th one has just died. A component in the plug-in charger station fails, causing the torch unit to not activate or charge. Each time I returned one to the Southampton High Street store, I explained the situation. The response was that I was the only person to have returned one !! I have always got a replacement, but only during the year warranty. Whilst they work, they deserve 5 stars. Only 3 stars since the failures.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Features but not reliable Like several other reviewers I liked all the features but the unit failed after 25 months (so out of guarantee). I dismantled it to find the same component failures as another reviewer, but more worryingly the insulation on the two mains wires had also burnt through where they appear to have been in contact with the rectifier diodes. I have replaced the components with better quality ones (high dissipation resistor and high temp. low ESR electrolytic) together with heat resistent mains wires. I would only recommend this repair if you are competent with electronics.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The fault in this clever light This is a very smart unit but it is reported by many purchasers to be failing early. One of my two failed after a year and I think I have found the cause. The charging base rectifies the mains ac to 320V dc which is used to drive a LC oscillator at about 50KHz. The magnetic field from the coil (L) charges the light unit. This is what seems to be the failure process in my unit:- I found the resistor R4 (2k4 - I replaced with a 2k7) had fried. This had happened because the electrolytic E1 (4.7 micro 400V) had gone open circuit and allowed excess ripple current to pass through the remaining components. When sourcing a replacement capacitor I saw the short life (100 days) quoted for electrolytic capacitors when working at the top of their temperature rating. These light units do run warm and this may be the recurring problem that others have reported. I have repaired both my units with what I hope are better quality electrolytics. This repair is quite straightforward but remember that this is a mains circuit and there are 320V across this capacitor - look don't touch. If you suspect that the transistor has failed please note that the component shape printed on the circuit board is the wrong way round! I see from Maplins Ts & Cs that I must state that this repair should only be carried out by competent people. Happy soldering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is honestly a fantastic piece of equipment. It serves as my main light on each landing of my house. Brilliant concept and stylish in design as well

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Super item...but unreliable! Bought two of these, and they're a great idea, providing plenty of light at night, which is triggered by a sensor. And they double up as an LED torch too. However, they don't appear to last longer than 1 year. I'm about to return my second unit for a replacement, and it appears others have the same issue. So, cannot recommend.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Died after 16 months The unit I had has just died after approximately 16 months. It was good while it lasted, but I had hoped it would have lasted longer. The dilemma I have is should I buy another? At £14.99 it is too expensive to treat as disposable.

In a powercut, assuming the battery is fully charged, how long will the torch remain lit before the battery goes flat. A competitor product had such a puny battery it only lasted 20mins which isnt much use!

This info isn't listed on it's specifications. I will order one from stock and update this FAQ once I have the info.

Who is the manufacture of this product? Where can I get a circuit diagram of the base charger unit? This is my second unit and both have failed due to a burnt out resistor R4, is there a known design issue? What is the value of the resistor R4?

Asked by: Adee
Please have a look at my comment in the review section. I had the same problem many months ago, and a new unit has just failed. The repairs I detailed there are still working after 7 months. (Change both R4 2k4 or 2k7 and E1 4.7 micro 400V). Note it is a high voltage circuit.
