You would need a PS2 connector on your laptop.

will the p.s.2 spitter work on a desktop, I have just fitted a giga-byte motherboard which only has one ps2 connection for either keyboard or mouse

Unfortunately we are unable to confirm if this will work on all desktops, It will work with some but not with most.
